When I enter a 1099-R, with a Traditional IRA conversion to Roth (not backdoor), occurring in the 2025 tax year, the Form 8606 needs that conversion amount to be shown on line 8, but it's not populating. I can't find a manual override to getthe number in there. How do I get a correct form 8606 done?

Hi -- thank you for the idea. I did try that - entering correctly a zero basis, but the result - was line 8 still did not populate. I experimented with entering 50 cents and again entering $5 for the basis, but line 8 again would not populate in any case. What should I do now? The net effect is that it is not being taxed, so that is the good news. But as a result line 14 (total basis for 2025 and prior) is a zero instead of $8000. Is that OK for future form 8606's? Do I need to get this fixed?

No, the form needs to be correct. I just created a whole new return and added the 1099-R and went through every one of the questions asking about IRA's. You input the basis on one screen. Another screen asks for the value at the end of the year, I used zero for that claiming I had rolled it all over. I am having no issue. Here is what I did:
I can't see what you are doing but customer support can. You may want to give it one more go and then contact support.
I wonder if you could have a piece of data stuck. A full or corrupted cache can cause problems in TurboTax, sometimes you need to clear your cache (that is, remove these temporary files).

Hi @AmyC - Thank you for all the work on this. I deleted the 2 forms and re-entered exactly as requested. Still no $8000 appearing on line 8 in form 8606. I will contact support.
I have this same issue. I'm amended my 2023 return because I filled out this section incorrectly, which carried over the incorrect basis in 2024 and 2025. Now that I have the issue corrected, Turbotax is not populating line 8 correctly even though all information is correct. I also deleted the form and re-entered it. Line 16 on Form 8606 shows "if you completed part I, enter the amount from line 8. Otherwise, enter the net amount you converted....." The converted amount does display correctly on line 16. Ideally, the two lines would display the same value for a backdoor conversion. I also previewed the tax forms with the worksheets and the Taxable IRA Distribution Worksheet is completed correctly - it's just not carrying over to form 8606.
Hi - Here is what I learned after I paid $60 for turbotax help. First - the two TT reps I spoke to could NOT see my return. The first TT rep gave up. Then I tried again with a second rep who again could not see my return. Setting that aside, the 2nd rep listened carefully and analyzed the situation. Look at language on line 8 of form 8606 - it says NET - and according to the TT rep this means Line 8 is supposed to show the amount that is taxable - because it is NET, over and above, the allowed amount. So if you have a zero in there, it is probably correct. In my case, the taxable amount of ZERO was correct, and all was OK. Yes, this is different advice from the TT employee in the community that first answered me. She was apparently wrong, so between that issue and the tech issues after I paid $60, I am a little bit disappointed! I hope this helps you. Remember I'm not a CPA, and I'm not a tax expert.
thanks for the info
it is a shame that turbo tax
1. made such a common and simple case so complex
2. and made it wrong!
my cpa back in 2024 did it properly.
and if you read form 8606, line 13 is the sum of line 11 and line 12, and line 11 relies on line 8, how could you get Line 13 when Line 8 is 0?
shame on turbotax!
here is what i got from baldietax
"from the article you posted - it's empty because "Turbotax uses the “Taxable IRA Distribution Wkst (per IRS Pub. 590-B)” to fill out this form""
if you search Taxable IRA Distribution (when you print all info into a pdf file), you will find turbotax does the calculation there
