Yes, you should file for an extension and use your wife's and son's SSN to file your tax return.   An extension will allow you to file until October 15, 2026.   This is an extension to file your tax return, not an extension to pay your taxes. You must estimate your taxes due and pay them by April 15, 2026 to avoid penalties and interest.   You can use TurboTax to e-file an extension by clicking here.
I can be claim on some else’s return
You can tell the software you will mail a check to get past the question, and then go ahead and pay your tax due by whatever method you actually want to use.  Pay by April 15, 2026.

@JohnW152  @DianeW777  @RobertB4444  @AnnetteB6    Guys, Revisiting this from last year because i need help.   So I have $2380 this year ( 2025 ) from this same income category ( box 3 income ) and its triggering the self employment tax and charging me $490   now, i just found a way to upload this to the other income section because this is not a business for me and i think i am now paying like $300 ( miscellaneous income - other income )... which is more correct.   but possibly still inaccurate - i might not owe taxes at all because the services are not taxable - i'm not an employee, its not my business, and they are reimbursements for time spent in zoom meetings. the people i work for say its not taxable but their same corporate finance team issues these tax forms.    thing is - some non-employees here with the same position i have got their 'income' recharacterized as a 1099-NEC with $0.00 income, or 1099-MISC with 0.00... they did so by talking to the organization's finance team and the IRS   i tried to get the organization to do the same for me but they won't respond. one person responded and she just offered softwares / services that offer tax advice.. but no specifics. i seem to remember them telling me that my services are reimbursed and not taxed   let me say more about what i do there - i attend zoom and teams meetings and sometimes in person meetings. i vote on things for the community, and i write and make presentations about the board members' works and report any news. i get paid a stipend in the form of an ACH transaction to my checking account. it is characterized on this monthly 'paystub' as a stipend. doesn't mention taxes. I AM NOT AN EMPLOYEE. I am part time ( less than 10 hours per week ) and stipended and contractural only. i get no benefits. its small like a few hundred dollars per month.    what do i do to save that $300 on taxes? do i ask them to recharacterize the income to 1099-misc? does box 3 still make sense? do i tell corporate to redo my tax form? i already have the 1099-misc recharacterized as box 3.    is the kind of work i described taxable? please advise!

I clicked the "recharacterization" button before reading this discussion and of course got flagged for excess contribution to my IRA. Now I can't "unselect" by revisiting the topic on the online version of TurboTax. What should I do?

I live outside of the US and no longer make any US income or have ties to any US money. I have a foreign bank account because I live in a foreign country now which is why I have checked that on turbotax. While I understand this is a reason to pay for turbotax, what I am trying to explain is that I had clicked File 10 times prior to that and not been prompted to switch to the paid version. Having switched nothing, suddenly the software seemed to decide it wanted to make up reasons for me to pay to file despite me not oweing any money or getting any refund as I do not associate with US money anymore. Turbotax literally estimates my refund and amount owed to be $0 as well.   As for the schedule B, this was just the first reason it created before it switch and said it was because I have foreign income. It is my understanding I do not actually need a schedule B nor has one been added on to my account. Thanks for your response and if you have any further insight please let me know! I have since started the process by hand and completed a 2555 and a 1116 as well as a schedule 1 and obviously a 1040. Do you know of any other forms?
State Street Retiree Services for USPBC -Nortel Networks Retirement Income Plan issued a 1099R and (2b) of the 1099R taxable amount is not checked.

child's father and I have court order that states which of us can file and claim our 3 children each year (1 year I claim 1 child and he claims 2, and the next year it reverses).  When TurboTax desktop asked me about the children (it has all of the children's information from previous year's filings), I answered that I had an agreement for the 2 children he was claiming, and checked the box that said the other parent was claiming that child.  Yet it apparently included one of those 2 children he filed for only under the earned income credit schedule, because my efile was rejected stating that the earned income credit had already been claimed by someone else for that child.  I then went back and deleted the two children entirely from my dependents (even though it even stated in that screen that these children were not being filed as dependents by me) and it reduced my refund by $894.  My question is am I able to attempt to efile this correction version, or do I have to file by paper now?  Turbotax sure has become confusing for even the well versed, and I am guessing it's because of AI.

I have the same problem.  I called in to support yesterday and it was ridiculous. I downloaded Turbotax, entered (4) returns.  Only 2 were e-filed, both accepted with no rejections.  When I printed the 3rd, it told me I'd reached my e-file limit of 5 returns. Despite clearly stating the above, support suggested I had rejected returns that counted against my limit - used screen session to show they were lying. Blamed my computer, telling me I needed to reinstall Turbotax on a different computer - didn't work. Told me to simply print and file my 4th return - not what I paid for. Need an answer to this before April 10th, 2026.

from the  IRS There are popular loan programs that finance energy saving improvements through government-approved programs. You sign up for a home energy system loan and use the proceeds to make energy improvements to your home. In some programs, the loan is secured by a lien on your home and appears as a special assessment on your real estate property tax bill over the period of the loan. The payments on these loans may appear to be deductible real estate taxes; however, they are not deductible real estate taxes. Assessments associated with a specific improvement benefitting one home are not deductible. However, the interest portion of your payment may be deductible as home mortgage interest. Refer to Publication 936, Home Mortgage Interest Deduction, to see whether you might qualify for a home mortgage interest expense deduction.   this was issued in 2016, before the cap on mortgage loans. you'll probably need to use the pub to figure the deductble interest if you exceed the cap on mortgage debt. otherwise you would enter it as mortgage interest for which you did not receive a 1098. HOWEVER I HAVE NOT FOUND A WAY TO ENTER THIS IN INTERVIEW MODE. I have a desktop verrsion which allows entry in forms mode but that mode does not exist in online. perhaps online is different and has a provison

Reentered twice and still "needs review". Must be on a loop. Do I just ignore it?

2024 I had started an ecommerce business and needed more guidance on my taxes. This year it just automatically picked that package and I did not notice until after I filed and got my state refund back. I went to look at why the fees were so high and then realized what happened. Will they refund me the $127 or at least refund whatever the overpayment was ?

you enter the total on line 12. Then, in the first row, enter the resident state and either the percent or the amount. it computes the other   It's probably not programmed to perform the subtraction because perhaps you have multi-state filings. it may not be 90%/10% but perhaps 90%/6%/4%     don't know about CA, but in some states it gets complicated like IL. There are only certain IL tax-exempt dividends that can be excluded for IL income tax purposes. Even entering IL and 100% does nothing. There is a special schedule that has to be completed to subtract excludable dividends.

Some states are fairly quick with refunds, while other states can take a long time processing returns--even several weeks--as they crack down on detecting fraudulent returns.     Here are some things you should check:   First, you need to be sure your state return was successfully filed.   If you efiled, be sure your efiled state return was accepted.  If you used Online TurboTax, you can check by looking at the Tax Home in your Online account.   Or did you choose to file by mail instead?  TurboTax does not mail it for you.  If you chose that method, you have to print, sign, date, and mail it.   The FAQ below tells how to check on a state refund.   When you scroll down further there, you will see a link for your state.   FAQ:  How do I track my state refund? https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/tax-refund/track-state-refund/L3jgO8PGs_...
