No, you are not required to claim the mortgage interest on your second home if you choose to not include it, except in the case where your mortgage interest may be limited (as explained by user ncperson).     Typically, claiming more mortgage interest is a benefit to you which would reduce your taxes.  But you can choose to not claim all of your itemized deductions.  This is unlike income and ordinary and necessary business expenses where you are required to include them on the return regardless.     However, if your mortgage interest is being limited due to your total debt amount, then you are required to claim the interest on both mortgages so that your deduction is accurate.   [edited 3/21/2026 | 7:59 am PST]

You can check the IRS site for transcripts that will show when you filed returns.   You can check your online account with the IRS.   Or you can try using the TurboTax recovery tool to see when you last used TT to prepare a return.  Just so you know, if you pretty far behind in filing your returns, a 2021 refund has already been forfeited.   A 2022 tax return must be filed by April 15, 2026 or that refund will also be forfeited.  And...any tax due is still due with late penalties and interest that are continuing to add up.   https://www.irs.gov/individuals/get-transcript https://www.irs.gov/payments/your-online-account     Many people have multiple TT accounts and forget how to access them.  Log out of the account you are in now.     https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/account-management/many-intuit-accounts-turbotax/L9aVfKS1Z_US_en_US?uid=ll5g6zcx Account Recovery

TurboTax will suggest the switch to itemize once your deductions exceed the standard, but you can switch to standard if you'd like. This may make sense if your status is married filing separately, but otherwise, compare the two and make sure you really do want to switch to a lower deduction, if that is the case.   If you want to manually switch, here's how, from How do I change from the standard deduction to itemized (or vice-versa)?   "Go to the screen: Based on what you told us, [either Standard Deduction or Itemizing deductions] is right for you, and select Change my deduction. (Instead of using the link, you can also manually navigate to Federal > Deductions & credits > Deductions & credits Summary > Continue > If applicable, continue through any summaries> Now you will arrive at Itemizing/ standard deduction summary screen.) On the Which deduction do you want to take this year? popup, you'll see the dollar value of each deduction type. Select the type of deduction you want and Continue."

Yes. When entering unreimbursed medical expenses in TurboTax, you typically do not need to specify a provider if you don't have one. Medical expenses can include out-of-pocket costs for medicines, supplies, or services even if there is no single provider name to enter. Simply enter the total amount of your unreimbursed medical expenses when TurboTax asks for that information. The program will guide you through the details required for your deduction.

Thank you for the information.    I do have some more questions after reviewing the community board posts...   I thought Paid Family/Medical Leave was not taxable...am I incorrect? Is it taxable federally, by state (MA), or both? When entered as directed, my Fed and State amounts change drastically; and not in my favor...   Please advise 🙂

You are allowed to claim mortgage interest for your main home and a second home.  If your second home (summer home) has a mortgage, enter the Form 1098 for its mortgage in the Deductions and Credits > Your Home > Mortgage Interest, Points, Refinancing, and Insurance section of your return.     If you also use your summer home as a rental property, then the mortgage information will be entered in the Rental Income and Expenses section of your return.  Then, the personal portion of the mortgage interest will be transferred to your Schedule A after the rental information has been entered.
