Thank you. I figured as much. It was so suspicious because why would I need to upload anything if my forms are already there? They need to try harder… smh

@user17708937965 your 1099-R itself sounds fine so I don't think this is a Vanguard issue - 2(a) should have a value and I don't think the other 'total distribution' checkbox in 2(b) matters.   so what's happening on your 8606 - what is on line 8?  that should show the $7002 from the 1099-R.  if not it's still some sort of issue with those questions about the 1099-R so I would go back through those (I'm sure you have).  I would try deleting the 1099-R and input again (or input a 2nd one first and see what happens).   if you are on desktop in Forms mode at the bottom of the 1099-R in section B you should see values in B4-6 identifying it as a conversion.  double-clicking on line 8 of Form 8606 will show the associated 1099-Rs.
I’m trying to revisit my return but it keeps showing a check mark by it not letting me edit anything

Yes it finally worked this morning 2/25. I did have to process ALL the accounts in the new import as doing one at a time erases the prior results.
The subject is 2025. The answer is 2024. Confused!

No. If you e-filed: Banking information for direct deposit is wrong or closed If you entered incorrect banking information for your refund, you can change it if your return is rejected.  If it is accepted, however, it is too late to change it.  The bank will reject the refund and send it back to the IRS.     https://www.taxpayeradvocate.irs.gov/news/tax-tips/direct-deposit-changes-for-2026-could-affect-how-and-when-you-get-your-refund/2026/01/   You may get this notice— a cp53a notice   https://www.irs.gov/individuals/understanding-your-cp53a-notice   If you take NO action—-the IRS will freeze your refund for at least six weeks and then mail you a check.   If your refund is sent back to the IRS—- make certain that the address you entered on your Form 1040 is correct.  And…open all mail, even if it looks like junk mail.   And……if you choose “refund processing” or the “5 day early” offer, those involve a third party bank; sadly, you will have a lot of additional aggravation in tracking down your refund and getting a check.

I am having the same problem with my Vanguard 1099R. I did a split year contribution/backdoor conversion for 2024/2025. I had to file a Form 8606 with my nondeductible contributions (I performed in Q1 of 2025 for my 2024 contribution). That has been mailed to the IRS. However, I keep running into the same issue of placing my 7,001.62 in both box 1 and box 2(a). I have both box's in 2(b) checked and code 2 in box 7 (as well as the (x) for the IRA/SEP/SIMPLE). I believe I understand the process but after going through the prompts, it still shows as taxable income on my federal taxes. The questions I answer at the end of the the 1099R (converting all money to a ROTH IRA) as well as at the end of income section-answered "YES" to nondeductible contribution. Used 7000 as my basis for 2024 and then had my IRA account equal "0" by the end of 2025 with no outstanding rollovers or recharacterizations. My state taxes are correct but still looking at my preview of my 1040 line 4a and 4b, as well as seeing a notable change in my federal return due to the money counting as taxable in the software, so I am perplexed. It's the last thing holding me up from filing my taxes for the year.   Is there something that I'm missing @dmertz @baldietax? Should I call Vanguard to see if is should get a corrected 1099R with a box 2(a) as 0.00-because the numbers work out if that is 0.00? Did the original poster get this problem solved @gtak24?   I appreciate any insight. Thanks!

The preparation of Form 1040X Amended Return is expected to become available late on Feb 25 or the morning of Feb 26.  It may be in this week's routine update which typically occurs overnight on early Thursday mornings.   In the meantime, do NOT make any changes in your return.  When you start the amending process, it has to start off exactly as originally filed.   If you were due a Federal refund, you should wait for your original return to fully process at the IRS and that you have received the refund.   Before you prepare your amended return, also see the info in this FAQ and video:   FAQ:  How do I amend my Federal tax return for this current year? https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/tax-return/amend-federal-tax-return-curr...   If you amend the Federal return, you may also have to amend the state return (if applicable.)
I am running into the same problem both on mac os and windows. This needs to be fixed urgently.
