Yes you have to file married Joint or Married filing Separate. You should usually file a Joint return which is only 1 return combined for the both of you. Joint has the lowest tax rates and the highest Standard Deduction. And if you are in a Community Property state MFS gets tricky to figure out. Make sure to stick with this one account for the future. Just ignore the other spouse's account. Start a return and enter your name and info. It will ask if you are single or married. When you pick married a box will open for their name and info. Then when you enter any forms like W2s or 1099s be sure to pick who it is for. That is very important. When you get married you are considered married for the whole year even if you got married on Dec 31. If the bank rejects the deposit they will send the refund back to the IRS and the IRS will mail you a check to the address on your return. Were you having any fees deducted from your refund? Then it would go back to the 3rd party bank that took the fees out.

At the end Turbo Tax does show you the combined net amount of federal and state. But that's only for your own info. Could you have gotten an Advance on your refund? Check your bank account for any other deposits from the IRS. And double check 1040 line 35a. Could you have selected to apply part of your refund to next year? Maybe you thought you were applying it to the state instead of next year? Check 1040 line 36.

you should be able to select direct debit (TurboTax info section) and specify any date on or before 4/15/2026
(the actual withdrawal may occur a few days later) you are responsible for providing the correct routing and account numbers
OR you can mail 1040-V with payment postmarked on or before that date

this is a TurboTax bug. It thinks you used the last-month rule (LMR) in 2024 to make a full-year's contribution. If used, the rule requires you to maintain HDHP coverage for every month in 2025. You did not use the LMR. The workaround is to go back to the 2024 data and say you had no coverage for any month.

Did you choose to have the Turbo Tax fees deducted from your refund? You misunderstood. The extra charge was only to have the fees for both federal and state taken out of your federal refund. Sorry you can not get federal and state refunds together. They come from different places and at different times. Track your state refund https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/tax-refund/track-state-refund/L3jgO8PGs_US_en_US?uid=lvsn577f You paid the extra charge for the Refund Processing Service https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/choosing-a-product/help/what-is-refund-processing-service/00/25889

@turb0wu Yes that could happen. Are you on Windows? When you save the second return the first time go to File-Save AS. And even save the first return with different name. Don't use the default name given by the program. The default name should be something like.....2025 Tax J Form 1040 Individual Tax Return. So you would want to save it as 2025 Tax Jason Form 1040...... and 2025 Tax Jenny Form 1040 You need to go to FILE - SAVE AS and give the return a unique name you can tell apart. At least add the full first name. You don't have to use or accept the name Turbo Tax gives it. I save all my returns with different names. The file name doesn't have to be the same as the tax return. The files will end in .tax2025 and should be in your Documents then in a Turbo Tax folder. Also before you start the second return I would make a backup of the .tax2025 file like copy it to a thumb drive incase something goes wrong. You should always be making backups frequently. Here's a screenshot I made several years ago

Unless you paid to have TurboTax Pro prepare your return, you have to fix the issue. For this forum to help, we need the reject code or message.

If you did not have such coverage, get a letter from Healthcare.gov stating that and then send it, the IRS notice, and a short letter signed and dated saying you are enclosing proof that you had no such coverage to the address in the notice.

Thank you for sharing. Please help me understand further as this is the first time I will file for 2 people in the same family using the desktop premier version. My main concern is about the override of information, and what will be transferred next year. Example, Jason Tax and Jenny Tax. Both first intial is J and last name is Tax because they we are siblings. When I file the first tax return, it should be fine. When I file the second return for Jenny, will all her information override mine (Jason) and the IRS will not have Jason's tax? Thank you for your time and consideration.
