@mmoul1 asked:  "IRS found an error in my return. How do I correct my TurboTax file for both federal and state?"   That's overly broad.  You would need to explain what the error is.  This is a public Internet forum so don't post any personal info.   Someone familiar with the particular topic may be able to tell you how to correct it here in this user forum.   Did the IRS send you a letter?    If so, it should have told you what the error was.    Did the IRS ask  you to take some action to fix it, or did the IRS already change something in your return on their end?    And what type of letter is it?     There should be a CP or LTR number, likely in a right corner.   If you want to speak to someone at TurboTax and did not purchase optional Audit Defense, then TurboTax has a free Audit Support Center that can help you with an IRS letter.    The special phone number is low down in the table at this FAQ:   FAQ:  TurboTax Audit Support Center https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/tax-audit/turbotax-audit-support/L6AcMoNFD_US_en_US

@nishaa3089 asked:  "Is it ok to get my refund deposited into my girlfriend account?"   That is not recommended and has a very high rate of failure.  Many banks will not accept a deposit if your name is not on the account.   If the bank refuses the deposit, it will go back to the IRS who would issue a check in the mail which takes several weeks.     And although your relationship may currently be strong, that can sometimes change, and there's always a chance the account owner could keep or spend your refund.   See this: FAQ:  Can I deposit my tax refund into someone else's account? https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/tax-refund/deposit-tax-refund-someone-else-account/L3pAkqG74_US_en_US

My spouse just accidentally efiled her taxes, but she had made tax withholding adjustments (and according to rules should be submitted in paper). Should we call someone to cancel that efile and turn in a paper file, or should we just wait for the IRS to contact us about the error?

Hi everyone, I’m hoping to get some insight—here’s my situation: Residency & Income I was a full‑year California resident in 2022. I had NY‑source income because some RSUs were granted while I worked in NY, but they vested while I lived in CA. Taxes Paid Prepaid NY estimated/withheld: $12,546 Prepaid CA state tax: $20,504 2022 Tax Filings NY non-resident return: allocated all W‑2 income to NY, claimed credit for CA tax CA return: claimed credit for taxes paid to NY Paid NY: ~$11,116 CA refund: ~$16,005 NY Penalty Notice On July 22, 2025, I received a notice stating I owe a penalty on the NY underpayment based on a 5.727% rate because my total NY tax liability ($21,295; calculated based on the safe‑harbor exceptions) exceeded my NY prepayment ($12,546). Questions I Have Does NY just look at NY payments versus NY liability, regardless of CA credits? Can I request a waiver if the underpayment resulted from following my CPA’s advice?

Premium and the Live-assisted feature are not independent products,  When chosen, they become a single product, which does have a higher fee.  The Live feature is an upgrade from regular Premium, and your product would then be called "Live Premium."  And Live Premium would be what you would be charged for.  There would be an additional preparation fee for a state return (if applicable.)   With the Live feature, you can consult a tax expert for help during preparation, and if desired, a review of your return prior to filing.   FAQ:  How do I get TurboTax Live? https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/intuit-product-orders/get-turbotax-live/L2kcnq0BN_US_en_US   FAQ:  How to I connect with a tax expert in TurboTax Live? https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/product-setup/connect-tax-expert-turbotax-live/L73wOZD5D_US_en_US

@Mimigwyn wrote:  When will I get my refund it’s been since Feb I’m irritated and been sitting here calling everyday No one can know anything about your specific refund, but we can tell you some things to investigate and give you a couple of options.   First, what is displayed at the IRS "Where's My Refund" tool?   Is there any message there? https://www.irs.gov/wheres-my-refund   Here are some tips when using that IRS tool:   If you efiled back in February, be sure your efile was accepted for processing.  If you used Online TurboTax, you can check at the Tax Home inside your account.  Does it say accepted, rejected, printed, started, ready to mail, or what? When using the IRS tool, be sure you enter the correct tax year, SSN, and filing status. Be sure you are using only the Federal refund amount.   Do not include any state refund or any total refund or net refund (Fed and State) that TurboTax may have provided on a summary screen.   Look at your actual Federal return to get the Federal refund amount to use in the tool, i.e., your Form 1040, Line 35a. "calling everyday..." Who are you calling?  Are you referring to the IRS automated refund hotline?

You cannot change the tax year.   The current online program is for 2024 only.   Only a 2024 return can be prepared online and only a 2024 return can be e-filed.   Online preparation and e-filing for 2021, 2022, and  2023 is permanently closed. Note:  The desktop software you need to prepare the prior year return must be installed/downloaded to a full PC or Mac.  It cannot be used on a mobile device.   To file a return for a prior tax year  If you need to prepare a return for 2021, 2022, or 2023  you can purchase and download desktop software to do it, then print, sign,  and mail the return(s) https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/past-years-products/ You may also want to explore purchasing the software from various retailers such as Amazon, Costco, Best Buy, Walmart, Sam’s, etc.   Remember to prepare your state return as well—if you live in a state that has a state income tax.   https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/state-taxes/contact-state-department-revenue/L9qVToi02_US_en_US?uid=m6e06um0   When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.   Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.

No--If you were a W-2 employee, you need your W-2 and your need the employer EIN.     TurboTax does not have your W-2.   W-2’s come from employers.  There is not a federal or national website that provides W-2’s.   If your employer is partnered with TurboTax to allow the W-2 data to be imported into the software you can do that---but you need the actual W-2 so that you can enter the EIN and the amount from box 1 to import the other data from the W-2---which just saves you the little bit of keying in of the other information.   Every 2024 W-2 that you received must be reported on your 2024 tax return, even if they are for small amounts.  Remember that each one of those W-2’s has your Social Security number on it, and that income was reported to the IRS by the employer.  You do not want trouble with the IRS for under-reporting your income or have your refund delayed by having missing income.   ALL of your W-2’s must be entered on the SAME tax return.     Go to Federal>Wages & Income to enter a W-2. After you enter the first one, you click Add Another W-2.     W-2's come from your employer, and they have until January 31 to issue it.  Some employers allow you to import the W-2 through the software, but for security reasons you still need information from the actual W-2 to import it. Some employers have payroll sites that will have your W-2. You might need to phone, text, drop in, email and/or snail mail an old employer to make sure they know where to send your W-2.   https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/tax-forms/get-copy-w-2/L8FTim9MO_US_en_US?uid=m68ee4os   https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/import-export-data-files/import-enter-w-2/L55HzdeDr_US_en_US?uid=m68efe36   And….SAVE YOUR OWN W-2!  TURBOTAX DOES NOT SAVE IT FOR YOU.  TurboTax will not have a copy of it in your account and will not have an image even if you snapped a photo or imported it.  It is up to you to save it for your own records as stated on the back of the W-2.

A TurboTax Online account can be used for only one tax return. When you did your mother's tax return in the same account that you used for your own tax return, your mother's tax return replaced yours. Your tax return is now gone and there is no way to retrieve it. You cannot switch back to your own tax return. You should have used a separate account for your mother's tax return. You can have up to 5 accounts with the same e-mail address.

You should put the address where the IRS should send mail to you if they have to send you a letter or mail a check. BUT, are you a U.S. citizen, resident alien, or nonresident alien? If you are a nonresident alien you cannot use TurboTax. A nonresident alien has to file Form 1040-NR, which TurboTax does not support.

@kristinacyr wrote: my daughter pays the mortgage and everything else.    Maybe you could give us some more information about the situation with the house and your daughter.   If she is paying for everything, what is the situation that it is your house, rather than she owes the house?   For example: One scenario could be that she couldn't qualify for a mortgage, so she asked you to buy it.  She paid for the down payment and the entire time she has paid for everything, and when the house eventually sells she will get all of the proceeds.  In other words, although the title is in your name, for all functions it is her house. Another scenario could be that you owned the house for a while and either used it personally or rented it out.  Then at some, she asked if she could stay there a while and you said "okay, as long as you pay the bills".  But then at some point she will move out and you will start using it again for yourself or rent it out again. Or your scenario could be something else.   In my opinion, we first need to find out that before we can tell you how to proceed (personally, I would treat the two scenarios above differently).

@jimshane yes, they will be....none of the tax law changes will impact the first 11 lines of form 1040.  So AGI will look the same, whether there is tip income or not. The tip income will be reported just as it was in 2024.    The method of determing the max Roth contribution does not change as it is based on the earned income reported on Lines 1 -11.    What changes is the deductions that are reported between Lines 11 and Lines 14.  The eligible tip income will be subtracted from Line 11,which would reduce the tax due.
