I contributed $7500 towards my 2024 Roth IRA in Feb 2024 expecting that I would have the income to be eligible for it. At the end of the year (first week of Jan 2025) after I realized that I would not be eligible for it I had Schwab (where my Roth IRA account is held) remove the entire $7500 and the gains I had upto then as excess contributions. However, I still received the Form 5948 from Schwab in May 2025 showing that I had contributed $7500 towards Roth for 2024. I am yet to file my 2024 returns as I have filed for an extension. My questions is - How do handle this on my 2024 tax returns ? Should I simply report $0 as my Roth IRA contribution since the excess was removed within the allowed period ? Or is there a form in TT to report the inital $7500 contribution and then the removal of it as an excess contribution ? I am aware that I will recieve a 1099-R in 2026 for the gains/interest earned and that I will need to amend my 2024 returns at that time. Thanks

2020 is no longer supported so even if you get it installed, you may not be able to update to the full 2020 program. what's on the disk is missing updates and all 2020 forms

Thanks @JotikaT2 for this excellent clear answer. The boxes for years 2021, 2022, 2023 were already populated (correctly), so there was nothing for me to enter. I was expecting same boxes for 2024 but apparently TurboTax automatically determines those values and whether anything from prior years could be used. Upon checking the Forms view (Sch B Form 1116, 1116 Comp Wks), I see that indeed this is the case: FTC for tax year 2024 is again maxed out, so nothing from prior years could be applied.

I'll assume you are using Online TurboTax. Are you wanting to retrieve a copy of the in-progress return, or are you wanting to download the *.tax2024 data file? The data file can only be opened in a copy of the 2024 personal desktop software, so I'll assume you want a PDF for easy viewing. Here's how to get a PDF copy of your 2024 in-progress return. You can take the PDF to your consultant, or you can print out the return from the PDF. NOTE: Be aware it's not safe to email tax files or sensitive documents in regular email which is not secure. The files contain way too much personal info and financial info, including possibly bank account info. You will have to pay in advance to have access to the PDF. The steps below tell how to do that. Open your return, and in the left menu column, choose Tax Tools, then Print Center. Then choose "Print/save/preview this year's return." On the next screen choose to "Pay now". Note: It may try to upsell you on add-ons like MAX, which you can choose or decline. The next screen should be an Order Summary. Review that, and if all is OK, click Continue. It should then prompt you for payment by credit or debit card. The screen only says "credit card", but it will take a debit card. If it should offer you the option to "pay later" out of the Federal refund, that can't be used for this purpose. You will need to pay now by credit/debit card in order to download/print prior to filing. Then you should have an option of which PDF to download/print/view. "Just my tax returns", or "include government worksheets (optional)", or "include government and TurboTax worksheets (optional.)" Be sure to store any of these sensitive tax files safely and securely to guard against computer theft, hacking, etc.

as an alternative you could try saving them in the PDF format and then trying to print out the PDF .
otherwise try contact support.

The actual data file cannot be review without the Turbotax app. you could pay your fees and then save the return including all worksheets as a pdf which can be given to your consultant. you could also give the consultant your login info. however, with an unknown device, their computer, accessing the file online, Turbotax may want to send your phone a verifying code which then must be entered in the Turbotax screen.

Is there a way to download the turbotax file, bring it to a consultant for review, prior to filing?
Thanks

Buy the desktop version for 2020 and mail the return. You can no longer get a refund for that year.

Once it’s efiled the IRS will process it which can take 3-4 months.

Hey thanks for responding! I am the student! Both parents deceased, no one can claim me as a dependent. The form 1098-T does say a little bit is in scholarships. Idk if that’s of the total amount or in addition to? I have filed my initial return and received my return back in Feb of this year. I’m just wondering if i can file this form i just received, late and after the cutoff of April 15th without an extension, or if it’s just a loss at this point? Do i have any options? Thanks!

You are working to resolve a 2022 excess. "TurboTax will put $158 (the maximum contribution I could have made for 2023), on line 19" Why are you concerned? That can only help you , not hurt you. Becuase you took out more than you had to, that forces revised 2024 Form 5329 Line 22 to be zero, Unless you grew a new excess on Line 23, then Line 24 must also be zero. @keeponjeepin @keeponjeepin
