You have up to three years from the due date of the return to amend for a refund.
If you want to go ahead and amend the return now to claim the credit, plan to file the amended return by mail and include a letter or statement explaining the situation you have experienced with the car dealer. It may help or it may not, but unless the IRS provides more guidance about how to handle the situation, that is the best option.

Yes I filed the duplicate. Honestly it was late at night and I was finishing up taxes on an amendment and I entered in the information that was on the form 1041. Of course, had I been paying attention I would have realized that these are the printed forms after they were filed by that CPA and he simply mailed them to me to keep for my files, but I went and entered the exact same amounts onto the K-1, including the EIN. The bigger issue is that upon seeing the massive liability it says I owe, I prepared my account with funds from my savings to set up a payment for auto debit. When I realized what I had done, I quickly transferred the money back from my checking to my savings. But I don't want there to be this tax balance just sitting out there so that's why I was asking about how to pull that back like I never did it. The CPA's filing was the correct one and should stay.

Wait till you get the notice; you can only pay a balance due on the website anyway. If you wait until you receive the 12C letter, the letter will have a fax number or a code to use the document upload tool. You know you owe the $$, so just be prepared to remit it whenever you receive the notice. Since you have already filed and paid the balance due, you won't incur penalties.

The IRS sends refunds out on their own schedule.
Use this tool to see where your refund is in the IRS system.

Do you have a child? When did your spouse die? You can file a Joint return as normal the year your spouse died. For the next two years following a husband's or wife's death, the surviving spouse can file as a qualifying widow or widower if they have a qualifying child. That basically lets you continue to use the same tax brackets that apply to married-filing-jointly returns. After the year of death if you don't have a child you file as Single. And then the next year start over with a new return and new account. And don't transfer from the Joint return.

As long as the totals for the section are listed and the loss is already shown on the return then there is nothing for you to amend. You are finished.

In 2024, I purchased a used EV that qualifies for a $4000 EV tax credit. When I submitted my tax return on Turbotax it was rejected by the IRS because there was a problem with the EV tax credit. I found out that the dealer never submitted the vehicle information to the IRS ECO portal. I've been hounding the car dealer to get them to enter the vehicle information since the IRS made changes to allow dealers to enter time of sale information now for sales in 2024. The dealer has been very unresponsive, so I had to submit my return without the EV tax credit and hope to amend my return in the future if I can get the dealer to do their job. How long do I have to amend my return? Do you have any advise for dealing with this issue?

I suggest you report the correct inventory on your 2025 tax return. OR your 2024 tax return if you are amending anyway for some other reason. @sept031989

If there are no numbers in Part III of the K-1 form then there is nothing to report on your tax return anyway. You wouldn't be able to amend the return with zeroes.

You will need to contact the IRS for information. It might be easiest to set up an account with them. IRS Individual Online Account Taxpayers with a Social Security number or an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number can create or access their IRS Individual Online Account to get information they need to file their return. With an IRS Individual Online Account, people can: View balance owed, payment history and schedule payments. Cancel scheduled payments. Get transcripts. View or create payment plans. See digital copies of some IRS notices. View key data from their most recently filed tax return, including adjusted gross income. Validate bank accounts and save multiple accounts, eliminating the need to re-enter bank account information every time they make a payment. View, approve and electronically sign power of attorney and tax information authorizations from their tax professional.

I already amended my 2023 tax once but now I realized another mistake which associate with my 529 withdraw. Can I amend the 2023 tax again? Since there is no sheet of detailed calculation on the spending of 529 fund attached to the original tax form, I cannot tell where is the problem which led to an additional income from "excessive withdraw". But, I can show the calculation that I actually withdraw less than what I can. The question is how to make the amendment to show the correct calculation and what forms need to be modified in order to make the tax amendment.

So does that mean that I would need to pay for a TurboTax desktop version first? I would prefer to first go through amendment calculations using TurboTax to determine that it's actually worth filing an amendment to get some additional refund back. What if the difference is negligible, and it's not worth buying a desktop version? Is there a way in TurboTax to run through calculations first before spending any money?

Hey Dawn, in my original post I meant that the 156 individual options contracts are not listed on my tax return with the exception of one 1256 contract being listed on the return. So is that ok?
