If you maintained family HDHP coverage and you yourself were not covered by Medicare or any other disqualifying coverage, your eligibility to contribute the full $9,300 to your HSA was unaffected.  Given that you were unaware of the lookback period for your wife's Medicare coverage, it seems likely that you would not have changed to self-only coverage and you were eligible for the full $9,300 contribution.   Only actual excess HSA contributions are eligible to be returned, and it seems that you made no excess contribution.  A distribution of a purported excess contribution that is actually not an excess contribution constitutes an ordinary distribution no matter how it is reported on the Form 1099-SA.  You would need to enter the Form 1099-SA as having code 1 in box 3 and $0 in box 2.  (You might have to explain this to the IRS.)  As an ordinary distribution, you can apply the distribution to qualified medical expenses paid in  2024 to reduce the taxable amount of the distribution.   Your W-2 is correct.  No correction to your W-2 is needed.  Even if there had been an excess contribution to your HSA, no change to the W-2 is to be made.  The excess contribution would simply be added to your 2024 income on Schedule 1 line 8z after indicating to TurboTax that you did not have family HDHP coverage for the later months of 2024.  The earnings distributed with the returned contribution would also appear on line 8z.   You do not get a deduction for HSA contributions made through your employer because your employer has already excluded this amount from your earnings.  You should see $9,300 on line 9 of your Form 8889 because you had family HDHP coverage for all of 2024 and you yourself had no disqualifying coverage in 2024.

It depends on your percentage of ownership and if the ownership percentage changed in 2016.      Assuming you were half owner in 1985 and that the first parent's share went to the 2nd parent in 2016;  Half of your current cost basis is what you paid in 1985.  When the first parent died in 2016 his 25% cost basis steps up to 1/4 of the fair market value (FMV) in 2016*. But if  his share went to the 2nd parent, it doesn't  affect you.  In 2022, the 2nd parent's cost basis steps up to the FMV in 2022.    So your current cost basis for the sale is 50% of the purchase amount in 1985 + 50% of FMV in 2022.    *If they lived in a community property state, the whole 50% would step up.  But, that's not relevant to you.

I agree.... 2024 filing was the very first time I ever filed with Turbo Tax and I had a bad experience! I would usually use Free Tax USA and we NEVER had an issue with then. With TT we got our funds MAD LATE almost costing us to miss out on purchasing our home and some snake of a company called SBTG tax filing or whatever takes a cut out of our taxes for filing.... That's BS because TT and SBTG's business has NOTHING to do with my refund especially without me resigning the agreement of accepting a 3rd party to handle my taxes.. This can't be legal and now I will be fighting the other company for the rest of my owed funds. TT is garbage and I have WELL learned my lesson... I feel scammed honestly.

@rnbramirez  asked:  "if i bought tt online where do i enter product key code?"   Are you  asking how to download and install your desktop software that you purchased online, and how to enter the license key?  If so, see the steps in this FAQ which includes a screen shot:   FAQ:  How do I get started with TurboTax Desktop? https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/license-information/install-turbotax-cd-download-software-license-code/L1wFOSXur_US_en_US   Or did you purchase desktop software and happened to use Online TurboTax (web browser version) by mistake instead?  If so, the license code for desktop TurboTax cannot be used in Online TurboTax.   If that's your situation, we can tell you how to switch to the desktop software you purchased without starting over.

@ COSBO wrote: I entered my utilities expense for my home business and it correctly calculated the amount on form 8829, so why is there is an amount showing on Sch. C part 2 utilities? The amount showing on Sch C, part 2, line 25 is different than my total utility expense but more than allowed on form 8829. Here's a possibility that could explain that, or at least give you a clue how to troubleshoot it.  TurboTax also uses Schedule C, Line 25 to report "Communication expenses."   In the step-by-step interview did you enter anything in the box for "Communication expenses?"    If so, that flows first to the Schedule C Worksheet and then from the worksheet to Sched C, Line 25 and would be added to any utilities amount (if any) on that line.  View these images in order from left to right: .             . The first image is from the step-by-step entry.  The second image is the Schedule C Worksheet, and the third is the Schedule C in Forms Mode (see note below).     NOTE:  As you see on that third image, on the temporary Schedule C in Forms Mode, there are spaces for 2 sub-entries for Line 25.   These 2 sub-entries are not shown on a printed Schedule C--only the Forms Mode view of Schedule C.  The first space is for communication expenses, and the other space is for a utilities entry (if any were reported in this location.)  I believe you said you used home office expense on Form 8829 to report utilities expenses, so don't report them in 2 places.       Here's how to look at your own figures for the 3 images I posted above: If you are using desktop software, check your entry in step-by-step interview to see if you made an entry for "communication expenses."   Then go into Forms Mode, and look at the Schedule C Worksheet ( in the list it's abbreviated as Schedule C Wks).   Scroll down that worksheet until you get to Communication Expenses.   Is there a figure there that could be all or part of the figure on Line 25? Also while looking at the worksheet scroll down to Utilities and see if any figure is entered there that shouldn't be. Then look at the Schedule C in Forms Mode.
