You need to clarify exactly what you want to do.   Since next years tax returns have not been filed, there is no way to have next years tax refund applied to this years tax return.   You can apply the 2024 tax refund to the 2025 taxes.  Or you can have the 2025 tax refund applied to next years taxes.

Originally I accidentally posted this in "Deductions & credits." I'm re-posting this in "Get your taxes done."   Using TurboTax Premier 2025 on Windows 11. All updates installed as of 4/17/2026. Using "step-by-step," State Taxes, Other situations, Underpayment Penalty. For question "Do you want to let the Franchise Tax Board calculate the penalty and send you a bill?", answer "No." I entered values for last year's state taxes that don't qualify for an exception. For question "Did you earn your income unevenly during the year?", I answered "Yes." Eventually, get to page where you press button "Include on Return" instead of "Let FTB Bill Me." That causes TurboTax to do calculations for California Form 5805. (BTW, prior to getting to this, there is a page that shows "Federal and California AGI Adjustments". However, these are really just California adjustments (bug).) After giving the above answers in the step-by-step, go to Form 5805, and there is a problem in the entries for Part III, line 6. According to FTB 5805 instructions, these deductions should be limited if, "in any quarter federal annualized income ... is greater than: - $504,411 (married/RDP filing jointly or qualifying surviving spouse/RDP). - $252,203 (single or married/RDP filing separately). - $378,310 (head of household)." The instructions provide a worksheet for how to reduce the deductions for income greater than these values. I found that if I entered an income above these values, the deductions were NOT reduced. It appears that TurboTax is not using the worksheet for Part III line 6 entries.

My 16 year old made $3,565 and we claimed him as a dependent on our return.  TurboTax said he had a $1500 Michigan exemption and that he was due a $64 Michigan State tax refund since $152 was withheld and he only owed $88.  He just got a State of Michigan Notice of Adjustment and they changed his $1500 exemption allowance from $1500 to $0 and said he wasn't getting anything refunded.  I checked and everything looks correct on the state tax forms TurboTax generated.  9e is checked that someone is claiming him as a dependent, $0 on line 9a and $1500 on line 9e.  It seems to me like he should have gotten the $1500 exemption and that they do owe him the $64 refund.  No other explanation was provided in the notice.  On his Federal Taxes he didn't owe or have a refund due and he didn't have any federal taxes withheld in case that is relevant.
You received emails from TurboTax concerning the rejected tax returns.  What do they say?
How do I find out why my federal and state tax returns were rejected

So my return was rejected because I failed to select that I can be claimed as a dependent, Ive called turbo tax and they have been little to no help just told me to wait for my expert, i waited no reply, then they changed my expert, replies. All i have to do is check the box that says I can be claimed as a dependent. There is currently no "fix my return" button that people are saying i need. I paid for full service.

Quick update on this issue:    I paid the tax due on April 1st and then started an amended return on the 16th.  The sign in procedure and amendment process was pretty simple.   There were a few confusing screens when it offered the option of Standard vs Itemized return and I can see where the problem started in the first place.   It also identified several areas that needed "fixing" which were supposed to be addressed on the initial return.  It took me into a chat loop and I had to back up several times to get to the final transmission box.   This is definitely something that needs fixing in the future.     The good news is, contrary to online posts, I was able to successfully transmit the amended return electronically vs printing and mailing in the amendment.   I received a confirmation that the IRS accepted the amended return, so now the waiting begins.    The difference with itemization was VERY significant so I'm glad I was able to get this done.    I hope Turbo Tax does a better job with their product next year.
