Hi Marilyn, Thanks for your reply. The W2 that I received from the third party service company named Matrix has Box a, b, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 15 and 16 filled. Also Box 13 has 'Third-party sick pay' checked. And there was no state income tax withheld. Box 17 has $0. So I thought this income was tax free at least at state. I don't exactly know if this sick pay is paid by CA SDI or VPDI (for which I paid the insurance). When I asked them, they didn't provide much information, they just asked me to talk to a tax expert. My tax expert informed me that I need to pay tax both to federal and state as Box 1 and 16 has income filled. So I paid along with 2024 tax returns last year. But I called the California Franchise Tax Board (FTB) and asked the agent to check the W2, she mentioned that it should be tax free income. So I'm planning to file amendment. Could you please let me know if there will be any situation where Box 1 and 16 would be filled, but it's still tax free income? Thank you

Yes, ASC-311 is a deduction. See pages 71-72 of pub OR-17. When the federal tax liability credit is phased out in accordance with Table 9 the cap for ASC-311 becomes $1500/$3000 (single/joint).

Same here - No Windows 11, no new computer, no Turbo Tax. After decades of being a loyal Turbo Tax customer, I bought H&R Block - for less money than Turbo Tax. I did my taxes with the H&R Block software. The interface was different and I had to get used to it - not bad, just different. Am I still disgusted with Turbo Tax forcing this turmoil in the first place? YES!

It is automatic based on your age. It is not part of your Standard Deduction. The new Senior Deduction is separate and in addition to the Standard Deduction or your Itemized Deductions on 1040 line 12e. The 6,000/12,000 senior deduction will be calculated on 1040 Schedule 1-A page 2 Part V Enhanced Deduction for Seniors which goes to 1040 line 13b with any other sch 1-A amounts. Turbo Tax automatically includes it if you qualify. For Single the deduction starts to phase out at 75,000 and maxes out at 175,000 For Joint the deductions starts to phase out at 150,000 and maxes out at 250,000 If you are married you have to file a Joint return

I did download a new Adobe Acrobat Reader DC and mentioned below, that then the 1040X did show up; it must only be compatible with new version of Adobe Acrobat Reader. But also generates and error "An error exist on this page. Acrobat may not display the page correctly. Please contact the person who created the PDF document to correct the problem." When you are in Forms mode, go to the black banner then click File and then Print from the dropdown. On the popup, it will say that Adobe Acrobat Reader DC is recommended for viewing or printing the PDF. There will be a link to the website to download that program.

It sounds like you accidentally entered something that made TurboTax think that you were from north of the border.
This TurboTax FAQ tells you how to enter your Canadian pension income into TurboTax, but reviewing this really didn't help me build an answer for you.
So I have to fall back on the general answer: delete your SSA-1099, and re-add it by hand. It's surprising how often this helps.

I'm having a similar issue. My retirement annuity earnings are coming over from Fed to State return as taxable, but in Illinois they should not be taxable - at least, when I use the filing utility on the Illinois Dept of Rev website, those earnings are being excluded. This is a really big issue - TurboTax says I should pay $800 in tax, and the state of Illinois is giving me a refund of $40. What gives?

The Simplified Method was developed to, well, simplify things. This is because the General Rule calculations can be quite complex, not just for the taxpayer, but for the IRS to check it. This does not mean that the Simplified Method results in a better outcome for the taxpayer (although it might).
The Simplified Method is pretty much the same calculation for a broad spectrum of pensions and annuities.
"Why does the IRS only permit us to recover a few hundred dollars each year, and not the total amount? Or better yet, if we owe, why can't we apply the recovery amount that has not been recovered, towards our taxes owed?"
Unfortunately, the answer lies with Congress. The first place to start looking in Title 26 (the Internal Revenue Code) at 26 CFR § 1.61-11 - Pensions.
Then you would have to go search for your particular situation in the Cross References at the bottom.
Most things are not the fault of the IRS - they are mandated by Congress and the IRS has to struggle to figure out a way to implement whatever Congress appeared to mandate.
