I am doing an amended return and cannot figure out how to get a backdoor Roth IRA to show up correctly in form 8606. I am following the guide here: https://www.whitecoatinvestor.com/how-to-report-a-backdoor-roth-ira-on-turbotax/
1. Select "Personal Income"
2. Select "Retirement Plans and Social Security"
3. Select "IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R)"
4. Add new 1099-R form
- 1. Gross Distribution = $6000
- 2a. Taxable Amount = $6000
- 2b. Checked Boxes: [x] Taxable amount not determined [x] Total distribution
- 7. [2] Early distribution (except Roth IRA)
- [x] The IRA/SEP/SIMPLE box is checked on my copy of 1099-R is selected
5. Select Continue
6. "Did you inherit from XXX?" - No
7. What did you do with the money from XXX?
(x) NAME moved the money to another retirement account (or returned it to the same retirement account)
() NAME did something else with it (cashed out, etc.)
When selecting first option, these two options show up
() NAME rolled over all of this money
() NAME did a combination of rolling over, converting, or cashing out the money
THERE IS NO OPTION "NAME converted all of this money to a Roth IRA account"!!
If I select rollover, then go in
1. [Deductions & Credits]
2. [Retirement and Investments]
3. [Traditional and Roth IRA Contributions]
4. Select [Traditional IRA] checkbox
5. [Is this a Repayment of a Retirement Distribution] --> No
6. [Tell Us How Much You Contributed]
NAME total traditional contributions = $6000
Tell us how much of the above total contributions for YEAR you contributed between January 1, YEAR+1 and April 18, YEAR+1 = $6000
7. [Did You Change Your Mind] -> No
8. [Any Excess IRA Contributions Before YEAR?] -> No
9. [Any Nondeductible Contributions to NAME's IRA?] -> Yes
10. [Let's Find Your IRA Basis] -> $0
ERROR!! --> [Income Too High To Deduct an IRA Contribution]
Can you please help me figure this out? I am stuck in getting the Roth IRA in the tool. Using desktop Windows TurboTax Home & Biz 022.000.0965

Frustrated 1: I don't have an account with WF Clearing Services. I'm mostly sure that in past years I never used Clearing Services and don't remember it being an option. But I did go into my WF account and disconnected accounts from Intuit. End result is the same, import seems to start then fails with the same message: Your Wells Fargo account stopped syncing to TTWin But you were able to import by using Clearing Services. How did you get an account there? I'm gonna leave this alone for few days. I've wasted hours trying to get this to work

So the IRS "Where's My Refund" tool says the refund was approved and sent? https://www.irs.gov/wheres-my-refund More info is needed in order to know how you can check on it. Be aware that this is a public Internet forum, so do not post any personal info in this public forum. Was the refund supposed to go directly from the IRS to your bank account? Or did you choose any options that use a third-party intermediary bank to first receive the funds such as "Pay fees out of refund" or "Up to 5 days early" offer, or Refund Advance? "I called bank they don't have it." What is the status of the bank account? Is it still a valid account that you own, and the deposit info was correct? Or is it an account you closed at that bank?

@ lasko35g7 asked: "Will my federal refund change once I file with the irs? H & r block told me I would receive $60 more than what the turbo tax app tells me" No one can know in advance what is going to happen at the IRS. During return processing the IRS can always change a refund--up or down--if it disagrees with something in a return. It's probably more common for them to adjust something down, but occasionally up. It's also a possibility that the IRS could discover something wrong several (or many) months down the line when they finally have all the information returns in from the Payers (W-2's, 1099's, etc.), and their computers match all of those to your return. If there's a mismatch, for instance, they may send a letter. I don't know if "H&R Block told me" means their software or a person at one of their locations, but in any case, in terms of which one is correct, here's how to investigate. You'd have to compare the Form 1040 in the 2 products line by line to find where the discrepancy lies, then knowing that point of contention, you could see if there was something that was mis-entered in either product, such as a typo, reversed digits, missing decimal, etc. If everything was entered correctly and interview questions answered the same in both products, they "should" arrive at the same figure. The most likely scenario is that on one of the returns something was not entered exactly the same way--either a typo or an interview question answered differently, etc.

Ok, using TT2025 Premier Desktop. Trying to include the sale of a rental property in 2025. It was held long term. Cost of acquisition was 336,300 (of which 30,000 was land value). Sold in Dec 2025 for 306,100 which included $95,992.84 in sales costs, buyer credits, cap improvement (it was an OpenDoor sale). Depreciation to be recaptured including 2025 totals $87,400. Property was a single family residential rental (not my main home). TT is not generating a Sch D or form 8949 for the sale of the rental property. It is showing the sale only on form 4797 in PART I, not in part II. It is then deducting the entire loss of -51,443 (the loss plus 2025 Sch E expenses and depreciation) as though it was 100% deductible in 2025 instead of being subject to a cap of $3,000 to offset ordinary income with balance carrying forward. I do have less than $100 in cap gains from stock sales it could offset, but I can't figure out why it's using the entire -51,443 for 2025. I think this is bug in the calculation tree.

@ Charmss wrote: I was confused about a number so I tried to print the forms. After I print it, it shows the return is ready to mail but I need to make more changes. How to reopen it? Adding state or amend will all go to the amend page which is not ready yet. Do NOT start an amended return, or you will have problems. The way to correct something in an unfiled return is avoid the amend link and reopen the return using the Add a State method. Log in and go to the Tax Home (it may open there). Look for a link "Add a State." That does not really add one, but should open the return interview back up. Once you make your corrections, run the Federal review and state review if applicable. At the FILE section you can change the filing method from "file by mail" to efile, if you wish. "Adding state or amend will all go to the amend page which is not ready yet." Does that mean you have already been trying to re-open it by clicking on "Add a State?" I know of no other way to open the return interview back up other than the "Add a State" method (except for the amending process if one needs to amend a filed return, which is not your situation.) Clicking on "Add a State" should not normally take one to "Amend." However, if you earlier had clicked on Amend, I'm wondering if it started a Form 1040X in the background that you can't yet access to undo since that part doesn't open up until Feb. 26. I would think that amend process would be completely blocked, but if that's what happened, once it's possible you will need to undo the "Amended" return and delete the Form 1040X once it becomes available. So for right now, if "Add a State" does not open up your return interview and instead leads to "Amend", then you are likely to be in limbo a few days until you see what happens after Feb. 26, when that process is supposed to open up. If that's what happened, and after that date it still thinks you are amending the return, then, hopefully, you can undo/cancel the Form 1040X at that time. You may get some other thoughts/ideas from other users in this thread during the day.

Thank you for answering my question! It's too bad that TT's question isn't clearly stated with the relevant details that you provided. Now I can resume working on my taxes.
