Is your child a college student?   When you entered the information in MY INFO for them, did you go to the screen that asked about "Uncommon Situations" and indicate there that the child is a full-time student?   The question is in a weird place in the interview and you have to really watch for it.   It is important not to miss it.   Go back through the questions in MY INFO for your student.
Does it still ask for their tax ID if you check that you could be claimed as a dependent but are not being claimed?

@ GwenethOwens  ADDENDUM I left you Federal info above.  You didn't say if you have a state return or not.  If you do have a state return, then once you also change the state return filing method to "file by mail", you should also have a state return filing instructions in the list of state forms when you go into Forms Mode.  Sometimes a state also requires enclosure of a copy of the Federal return or perhaps certain forms from the Federal return.    If you need help with a particular state, then you can start a thread and name the state in the title to see if someone can help you with it or at least point you to the state DOR's website for info.

@ GwenethOwens wrote: You tell us to follow the instructions that Turbo Tax gives us. But what if there are no instructions? The only instruction page that would print out for 2024 is for electronic filing (it's now Dec 2025, we forgot that we filed an extension and never filed our actual returns!).    This is super frustrating!! I just need the basic information of what it says on that first page for mail in filing, but everyone always references THE INSTRUCTION SHEET. But the PC version does not offer this!!! You may have already done so, but before you file, be sure you report your extension payment so you get credit for it and that it shows up on your Form 1040. . Since you said "PC version", I presume you are using 2024 desktop software.   If so, you can open your return in the 2024 software and go to the FILE section and change the filing method from efile to file by mail, and that should also change the instruction form available in the list of forms..  Then you can go into Forms Mode and in the list of Federal forms scroll way down near the bottom of the Federal list, and the Instructions form should have changed from Efile instructions to File by Mail instructions.   But just in case, here's info for a Federal return   Assemble Your Return  (pasted from the Instructions to Form 1040) "Assemble any schedules and forms behind Form 1040 or 1040-SR in order of the “Attachment Sequence No.” shown in the upper-right corner of the schedule or form. If you have supporting statements ments, arrange them in the same order as the schedules or forms they support and attach them last. File your return, schedules, and other attachments on standard size paper. Cutting the paper may cause problems in processing your return. Don’t attach correspondence or other items unless required to do so. Attach Forms W-2 and 2439 (if applicable) to Form 1040 or 1040-SR. If you received a Form W-2c (a corrected Form W-2), attach your original Forms W-2 and any Forms W-2c. Attach Forms W-2G (if applicable) and 1099-R (if applicable) to Form 1040 or 1040-SR if tax was withheld."   ********** Where to file paper returns (depends on whether or not a payment is enclosed)        Choose your state at the page at this link to see the IRS addresses to use: https://www.irs.gov/filing/where-to-file-paper-tax-returns-with-or-without-a-payment       Once you select your state, you should see a table with 2 columns of addresses--one for "no payment enclosed" and one for "payment enclosed."  Choose your Form (such as 1040) and the proper column for the address to use.

Hello,  I am a US citizen attending a college as of now. Currently, I am a full-time student that is not working. My parents are not US citizens and they don’t live in the US, so I had some trouble filing my 2024 tax return. I wasn’t able to file before the deadline, but now I’m trying to file late. As a dependent on my parents, I’m being asked about my parents like their SSN ( which they don’t have) when I try to use a free tax filing software. Is my only option is to fill in the form and mail it? I would appreciate any advice on this. Thank you!

You have to answer a few screens in your 2025 online return to get the full left column menu to appear so you can go to the Tax Home to get the prior returns.  If you used Online TurboTax previously and now can't find the past online return(s), then you either didn't proceed far enough into your 2025 online return to find them (you don't have to actually prepare the 2025), or you could have multiple accounts. I'll discuss both scenarios below.   This answer assumes your previous returns were prepared in Online TurboTax.   Any return prepared in desktop TurboTax will not be in an Online account.  Here's how one would normally find past-year online returns and how to troubleshoot for multiple accounts (User IDs) if necessary.  Many people end up with more than 1 account.  The pathway to download the PDF or tax data file depends on whether or not you have started an online 2025 return.  I provide both scenarios below, so choose which one is appropriate for your situation.   If you have not yet started a 2025 online return: Sign in to your account.   What you see next depends on whether or not you have already started a 2025 return in that account.   If your left column menu is minimal, and does not have a Tax Home tab displayed, that would imply you have not started preparing a 2025 return in that account.  If you haven't yet started a return, it will start asking you some questions.  Answer those preliminary questions on a few screens (you don't actually have to prepare a return), and then when you are far enough into the process, the left menu column will change, and you'll then see a Tax Home option in the left menu column.  Do not click the Documents tab.  Instead, click on Tax Home.  Then on the Tax Home screen, scroll way down to the bottom to "Your Tax Returns & Documents".  Expand that section and choose the past year you want.   If your past returns are not shown there, then you likely have multiple accounts and signed into the wrong one.  I'll tell you below how to troubleshoot.   If you have already started a 2025 online return: Log in, and if you've already started a 2025 return in that account, then it may already open at the Tax Home.  If not, click the Tax Home tab in the left column menu.  Do not use the Documents tab.  At the Tax Home scroll down and expand "Your Tax Returns & Documents."   If the past returns are not there, see the steps below.   If you do all that and can't find the past return, here's how to look for multiple accounts: You can have up to 5 accounts that use the same email address for notification purposes.  A User ID may be an email address, but it doesn't have to be.  It might be only part of an email address, or it can be anything at all.   To get a list of your User IDs, reset password, and recover account access, etc., you can use the tool at the link below.  When using the Account Recovery tool, try using your phone number first if you can still access it.   After that, if necessary, then run the tool on your email address(es) you can access. NOTE: Before running the account recovery tool below, log out of all Intuit accounts including this user forum, or you might end up in a loop.  Then clear your browser Internet cache, close your browser, then reopen it, and go to the link below.  You may wish to copy this link so you can paste it into the new browser session. https://myturbotax.intuit.com/account-recovery If still no luck after running that on your phone number you can still access and email address(es) that you can access,  here's another method:          Go back to the tool again, but this time leave the data field blank, scroll down a bit, then choose the small blue link that says "Try something else", and it will look you up by other parameters.

Thank you, that matches what I did. My concern is that TurboTax seems to have calculated it incorrectly, and I need guidance on how to amend.   TurboTax had me enter the full mortgage interest in the rental section, then allocated 17% to Schedule E (rental) and 83% to Schedule A (personal). However, it did not apply the $750k federal mortgage interest cap to the personal portion, which is why I received a CP28A notice.   What’s the correct way to fix this when amending? If I reduce the mortgage interest amount so TurboTax recalculates Schedule A correctly, then Schedule E will be wrong because it will use 17% of the reduced amount. It will also throw off Schedule CA, since California allows interest up to $1M and my qualified mortgage principal is under that limit.
