Hello, I live in Texas and understand the basics of community property laws in the state. My question is in Turbotax how do I enter the W2s and self employment information? Do I enter half of each form for each of us like some other tax programs or do I just enter my income. My wife is self employed (as a gig worker) and so I understand that the income would be split between us but that the self employment taxes would only fall on her and the deduction would be split between us on form 8958. I saw the income adjustment section in Turbotax but it does not appear that you can reduce your tax withholding (I tried to enter a withholding adjustment and it said the maximum value was 0) even though it is supposed to be split between both people evenly since that is how we are dividing the income. Also, is the desktop version better for MFS?

@BWong:"I should have stated: NONE of the various TurboTax versions will work on personal, 1040, tax return, on Windows 10 computer for 2025 tax filing.." So, if I understand this correctly, businesses can still use TurboTax 2025 with Windows 10, however personal concerns filing personal taxes NEED to have Windows 11. Does that make ANY sense to anyone?

We sold stock in 2024, and reported the capital gains on our 2024 return from that sale. In 2025, we incurred additional expenses related to that 2024 sale. Those 2025 expenses should be reported as a capital loss in 2025. I can't figure out how to record this in Turbo Tax, and what information needs to be included. The EasyStep workflow doesn't seem to consider this situation. If you have any insight, please let us know. We're using the desktop version of Turbo Tax Premier. Posting here as I got no responses in the "after you file" forum. Thank you.

I used the standard deduction last year, so my Illinois income tax overpayment included in Federal AGI should reduce Illinois base income. Where/how do I enter it in my state return?

March 6 here and I have "Needs Review" issues with my 1099-NEC. 5 forms came in from last year that "Needs Review" which is obvious because there was on entry for the amount. I added the amount and the "needs review" was no longer on the 1099. I deleted two that were not needed. I then took pictures of 3 more and added them that way. the first and third ones came up with "needs review", and checking there was nothing flagged, missing, or wrong. I deleted the third one and and then the second one got the Needs Review added. I delete both assume that TurboTax programers borked the import. I hand typed them, and alas they all need review. I don't care that I can file it anyway. I pay for a tax program and if something this simple does not work -OR GET FIXED- how do I trust the program to do anything else correctly?

Turbo Tax is listing my employer/employee HSA contribution (box 12 code W) from my 2nd W-2 as an excess contribution. I am married, and over 55, covered by a family HDHP plan for the entire year and changed jobs in 2025. For my first job, my employer and I contributed a combined $8058. For the 2nd job, the new employer and I contributed $1491 = total contribution of $9549 (the 2025 limit for married over 55 is $9550) I've made it through the HSA interview and get the question on whether I'm going to withdraw the $1491. I answer no and get the summary showing that my total tax deductible contributions are $9549. Turbo Tax then goes on to calculate tax on the $1491. Please help. Thanks in advance! I am about ready to jump ship and work with a different tax services vendor.

If both your W-2's have $0 in Box 1, you won't be able to Efile UNLESS after entering them you get a screen 'Let's check for other situations' with a checkbox for 'Non-Taxable Medicaid Waiver Payments'. Since you uploaded your W-2's, go to the Income section and EDIT your W-2's. If this screen comes up for you, your problems are solved.
The W-2 income is included as non-taxable, and you should then go through the Earned Income Credit interview to see if you qualify. If the screen doesn't come up for you (or does not have the appropriate item to check), then DELETE your W-2's and report as follows:
At the Income Topics page, scroll down to 'Miscellaneous Income 1099-A, 1099-C' and Start.
On the next screen, scroll all the way down to 'Other Reportable Income' and Start.
On the next screen, 'Yes, other taxable income'
On the next screen 'Add'. For a description, say 'Medicaid Waiver Income' and put the total amount of the two W-2's.
This puts the income into your return; now you'll make an adjusting entry to make it non-taxable. Go thru the 'Miscellaneous Income', 'Other Reportable Income', etc. again, but this time for a description, enter 'Adjustment for Non-Taxable Medicaid Waiver Income' and the same amount with a minus sign in front of it.
However, if you get your income entered, and then the EIC interview says you don't qualify for a credit, you don't even need to file a return, if this is your only income. Just keep the W-2's for your records.
