I live in a community property state and am filing married filing separate.  My question has to do with the tax withholding adjustment (addition and subtraction question).    If I had taxes withheld and my spouse did not have any taxes withheld, how do I report this on the tax withholding adjustment form in turbo tax?  The spouse does not have a W-2 but has income from unemployment and a 1099-NEC.  How do I figure out the addition and subtraction adjustments if the spouse didn't have any taxes withheld?  I thought I would need to subtract half of my taxes withheld and enter that amount in the subtraction field but the form says I need to enter an amount less than or equal to 0.  Do I put a negative number in this box (half of the taxes I paid as a negative number) and put a 0 in the addition box since the spouse paid 0 taxes withheld?

For 2021 were you due a Federal refund, or did you owe taxes due?   If a refund, did you receive it?  Or if taxes were due, were they paid?    Also, did you have a state return that was successfully efiled?   If so, that would imply that a Federal return was successfully efiled and accepted, or the state return could not have been efiled.   Occasionally, some users think paying the TurboTax fees files the return, but that alone doesn't.  They still have to go all the way to the final screen to actually transmit the return by clicking on a "Transmit Returns Now" button.  In other cases a return might have been efiled but rejected by the IRS for processing.    The first thing you need to do if you used Online TurboTax is to see what is displayed for the status of the 2021 return.  In your account does it show as accepted, rejected, printed, started, ready to mail, or something else?   If you haven't found your 2021 return yet, here's how.  This answer assumes your 2021 return was prepared in Online TurboTax.   Any return prepared in desktop TurboTax will not be in an Online account.  Here's how one would normally find past-year online returns and how to troubleshoot for multiple accounts (User IDs) if necessary.  Many people end up with more than 1 account.  The pathway to download the 2021 PDF or tax data file depends on whether or not you have started an online 2024 return.  I provide both scenarios below, so choose which one is appropriate for your situation.   If you have not yet started a 2024 online return: Sign in to your account.   What you see next depends on whether or not you have already started a 2024 return in that account.   If your left column menu is minimal, and does not have a Tax Home tab displayed, that would imply you have not started preparing a 2024 return in that account.  If you haven't yet started a return, it will start asking you some questions.  Answer those preliminary questions (you don't actually have to prepare a return), and then when you are far enough into the process the left menu column will change, and you'll then see a Tax Home option.  Do not click the Documents tab; that's not the right section.  Instead, click on Tax Home.  Then on the Tax Home screen, scroll way down to the bottom to "Your Tax Returns & Documents".  Expand that section and choose the past year you want.   If your past returns are not shown there, then you likely have multiple accounts and signed into the wrong one.  I'll tell you below how to troubleshoot.   If you have already started or finished a 2024 online return: Log in, and if you've already started a 2024 return in that account, then it may already open at the Tax Home.  If not, click the Tax Home tab in the left column menu.  Do not use the Documents tab; that's not the right section.  At the Tax Home scroll down and expand topic "Your Tax Returns & Documents."   If the past return in question is not there, see the steps below.   If you do all that and can't find the past return, here's how to look for multiple accounts: You can have up to 5 accounts that use the same email address for notification purposes.  A User ID may be an email address, but it doesn't have to be.  It might be only part of an email address, or it can be anything at all.   To get a list of your User IDs, reset password, and recover account access, etc., you can use the tool at the link below.  When using the Account Recovery tool, try using your phone number first if you can still access it.   After that, if necessary, then run the tool on your email address(es) you can access. NOTE: Before running the account recovery tool below, log out of all Intuit accounts including this user forum, or you might end up in a loop.  Then clear your browser Internet cache, close your browser, then reopen it, and go to the link below.  You may wish to copy this link so you can paste it into the new browser session. https://myturbotax.intuit.com/account-recovery If still no luck after running that on your phone number you can still access and email address(es) that you can access,  here's another method:          Go back to the tool again, but this time leave the data field blank, scroll down a bit, then choose the small blue link that says "Try something else", and it will look you up by other parameters.   Once you find the 2021 return in the section "Your Tax Returns & Documents" you should be able to see the status:  accepted, rejected, printed, started, ready to mail, or something else?   If you end up needing to talk to TurboTax Support hours are 5AM-5PM Pacific, Mon-Fri.  If they show that you efiled the 2021 return successfully, see if they can give you the MeF confirmation number (aka Federal Submission ID) in case you need it for the IRS.   FAQ: What is the TurboTax phone number? https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/using-turbotax/help/what-is-the-turbotax-phone-number/00/25632

There is probably no way to open a TurboTax .tax file from 1999. The only way to open it would be with the TurboTax software for 1999. That software is no longer available, and probably would not work on any current computer even if you could find the software. There is a company called TaxPrinter, not affiliated with TurboTax, that can create a PDF from many old tax return files, but their website says that they cannot read a TurboTax file from 1999 "for technical reasons."
