Refund

The IRS generally states that 9 out of 10 tax refunds are processed within 21 days on a tax return that has been electronically filed.  However, that means that refunds can be delayed for 1 out of every 10 people, and it sounds like you are one of those!

As frustrating as it sounds, the only way to resolve this issue is through contact with the IRS.  Generally speaking when the IRS holds up a refund, they will send a letter to the taxpayer explaining why they are not issuing the refund and instructions on what to do to resolve the issue with the IRS. It's important to note that the IRS will contact you initially by mail, they will never start a contact with you by phone, email or text.

Have you received any letters from the IRS since filing?  if so, take a look at that letter - it should explain why the IRS is still processing your return, what information the IRS is looking for, and how you can respond with that information so that the IRS will resume processing the return.  If you did not receive any letters from the IRS, then you will need to contact the IRS directly and work with them to determine what the hold up is and how to get it resolved.  The IRS phone number for questions on individual returns (i.e. Form 1040) is 800-829-1040, and their office is open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. local time.  Once you work your way through the automated prompts, you should be able to connect with an IRS representative who can help resolve the situation.
