I recall reading in years past that one can “sort-of uninstall” past TurboTax programs so you can still see returns forms etc but no longer have the program clogging your computer. Can’t find it now. Still available? Name for it? Thanks.

Are you sure what you read was not referring to saving a PDF on your computer (or other media) and not reading the .tax file?
The only way to read the original .tax file would be to open it in the TurboTax program.
That has never been a thing. You should save your return as a pfd file each year so you can open it with any pdf reader like Adobe reader. Maybe you are remembering another program. But you need the full updated Turbo Tax program installed to open a .taxyyyy file.
