There are three primary ways to minimize your tax bill by adjusting your W-4 withholding:
- Enter in "extra withholding" on Step 4(c): here, you can enter in a specific dollar amount that you want your employer to take out of every paycheck; this is in addition to your calculated withholding.
- Add "other income" to Step 4(a): here, you can enter in your extra income that is not subject to withholding. This will cause your employer to calculate the tax withholding on what you make PLUS on the extra amount you input.
- Adjust your dependent credits on Step 3: even if you have qualifying dependents, you are not required to claim them on your W-4. You can enter in a lower amount here; this will serve to increase the amount of withholding from your pay.
