Additional Extension?

Having already received an extension, I’m wondering in an additional extension is possible and, if so, how difficult it would be to get it.

Additional Extension?

Hello timkeating!

All extensions are granted by the IRS. It will be best to contact them directly regarding additional extensions beyond the usual 6-month extension. Here is a link to their site regarding extensions: Topic no. 304, Extensions of time to file your tax return

Thank you!

Additional Extension?

There are no second extension for any tax year.  Only the one extension can be used for filing the tax return on or before October 15, 2024 to avoid a failure to file penalty if you have taxes owed.

If you have a tax refund on the 203 tax return you have up to three years, October 15, 2027, to file a return with a refund with no penalties.

Additional Extension?

Unfortunately there is not a way to file another extension to give more time to file your tax return.  A timely filed 2024 extension gives you until October 15, 2024 to file your return to be considered timely filed.

However, although October 15 is the last day for most people to file, some taxpayers may have more time. They include:

  • Members of the military and others serving in a combat zone. They typically have 180 days after they leave the combat zone to file returns and pay any taxes due. The IRS recognized combat zones can be found at this link: IRS Recognized Combat Zones
  • Taxpayers in federally declared disaster areas who already had valid extensions. For details, see the disaster relief page on IRS.gov, located at this link: IRS Disaster Relief By State There are quite a few areas that have automatically extended the due date for various returns for individuals living in certain areas.

There is usually no penalty for failure to file if you are due a refund.  Those who have yet to file a current year tax return, owe tax, and did not request an extension (or does not file the return by the extended due date) can generally avoid additional penalties and interest by filing the return as soon as possible and paying any taxes owed.

Additional Extension?

Hi,

Here is a TurboTax article that explains your question about being to file an extension after 4/15/24, this cannot be done for your 2023 federal personal taxes past midnight on 4/15/24:  TurboTax Can I file an extension after April 15, 2024?

However, there is no penalty if you are getting a tax refund from the IRS.

Here is a TurboTax article about IRS penalties:
