Schedule 8812: Advance payments received must be entered? / Principal Place of Abode and Letter 6416 Information Smart Worksheet

My Spouse and I received $1400 each of the Economic Impact payments. Now the question is I'm doing my taxes on TurboTax and it keeps telling me I have to fill out the part the Schedule 8812, advance payments received must be entered. When I enter the $2800 it lowers my refund. We received a letter from IRS stating that the Impact payment is not considered taxable income. We don't have any kids so do I just zero amount for the child tax credit payments.

Yes, you enter zero on Schedule 8812. The Economic Impact Payment is not an advance Child Tax Credit payment. They're two different things. Schedule 8812 is for the Child Tax Credit, not the Economic Impact Payment. You did not receive any advance Child Tax Credit payments, so you enter zero for that. TurboTax will ask you separately about the Economic Impact Payment you received. You enter the $2,800 there. That does not go on Schedule 8812.

Turbotax keeps saying there is an error on schedule 8812. I am a 73 - have NO children living at home. How can I delete this form?

@Joybellno1  You can't delete Schedule 8812. When the error comes up, just enter zero for the advance payments you received. That will eliminate the error.

TurboTax asks for each payment, so you should enter 1400 and 1400.

TurboTax also first assumes you received NO advance payments, and may give you a full Child Tax Credit.

When you enter the advance payments you already received, your refund may be lowered since the advance payment amount is always subtracted from the credit.

I'm so confused? My husband and I divorced in 2020. We were married for 15 years, we have two sons and agreed that we each would claim one on our tax returns. He claimed one as did I the other one, he passed in July 2021 sadly, he was still claiming or shall I say receiving the child tax credit for our other child which his mother emptied out his account and never reimbursed us the money for my other son. I am the custodial party he was a non-custodial party. I got CTC for one child in 2021, as for my other son I don't know what to do. They both lived with me that year however we agreed to each claim one on taxes just to be fair. I just filed my taxes yesterday and remembered that I was told to let someone know about my other son to get those lost CTC for my other son that my spouse claimed on his 2020 taxes on this year's 2022 return, I do know that he did receive the first CTC in July we talked about that the week before he passed away in July of 2021. Now I am not sure if I should amend my return that was just filed yesterday and complete form 8812 or wait, not sure how to receive those credits back or what exactly I should do. His mother closed his bank account and withdrew all the funds did not receive anything for one of my sons. Ughhh. HELP!!

The advance child tax credits received in 2021 must be entered so they can be subtracted from the Total Child Tax Credit you are eligible to receive on the 2021 tax return.  As the description for the payments sent to you in 2021 says, they were an Advance.

My refund was zeroed out. How do I fix this issue?

Will an amendment fix this issue?

What advance payments received are you talking about when you ask me to complete form 8812 and enter the amount of the payment amounts. I am filing single and using standard deduction. I have no dependents.

Everyone is being asked this question since TurboTax does not know if the user was one who received these advances from the IRS in 2021.

Enter a 0 (zero) when asked to enter a number on the Schedule 8812. This will correct the issue and remove the Schedule 8812 from your tax return so that you can file the return.

I am entering 0 for the advance payments.  When I run the smart check again, turbotax brings me back to the form again.   its an endless loop.  some of the entries on the from show up as 0.  and others as 0

How do I get turbo tax to accept the numbers and move on?

After you enter the 0 for the advanced child tax credit and are back on the screen for smart check click on Done and continue.

when I try to TRANSMIT my return, turbo tax forces me to do one more check and then it takes me back to form 8812.  It already had 0 entered on all the spaces.  I re-enter the 0 and then it takes me back to the TRANSMIT screen.

When I hit TRANSMIT, it takes me back to form 8812.  It is in an endless loop.  How do I get it to transmit the returns?

I didn't use turbotax for taxes this year. I had my taxes done by a personal CPA.
