My federal return indicates I don't qualify for a Federal EITC but on the state of Maryland return it is saying I'm due a Maryland EITC based on the federal of $351. This exceeds my Maryland withholding. Something doesn't seem right???

The Maryland earned income credit is based on your federal earned income credit, so that does sound strange. I suggest you look on your federal tax return on line 27(a) to see if there is a federal earned income credit on your return. It may be there in spite of the notice you saw.

To view your form 1040 and schedule 1 to 3:

    1. Choose Tax Tools from your left menu bar in TurboTax Online while working in your program
    2. Choose Tools
    3. Choose View Tax Summary
    4. See the Preview my 1040 option in the left menu bar and click on it
    5. Choose the Back option in the left menu bar when you are done

I am preparing the return for a young relative. She does not qualify for the federal EITC because she is under 25 with no children. The Federal credit she would have received if eligible is $354. That is the amount that the Turbotax software is coming up with as her Maryland EITC.  Is that correct or is she also ineligible for the Maryland credit as well? If ineligible do I need to manually back out the $354 from her Maryland return or have I input something incorrectly?

Please review this Maryland website, page 2, which states:

Additionally, Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) filers and childless adults aged 18- 24 may qualify for the Maryland credit, even though they are not eligible for the federal credit.
