How to check status of NC tax return?

Response I got from NCDOR --

Unfortunately there is no self-service type option yet available where a taxpayer can check the status of a non-refund tax return or return where the refund is credited to the next tax year.  The Department is currently working on a tax modernization upgrade, and this is one of the most requested options.  I suggest continuing to save all confirmation emails and payment records along with copies of the North Carolina tax return even if they are in digital format.

Original post --

I've read about NC's Where's My Refund website, but how can I check if my NC return has been processed if I am not getting a refund?  I applied all of my 2025 overpayment towards 2026 estimated taxes and the NCDOR website doesn't like my entering zero as the expected refund.

Don't know if it works...but did you try typing in the refund $$ amount that existed BEFORE the re-routing to the 2026 tax estimate?

Tried entering amount of overpayment, but that didn't work.

I don't know if the following will work for NC, but in my experience it works anecdotally for me for the Federal return.  When I'm not getting a Federal refund, I enter $1 in the IRS tool, and it usually responds that it is being processed.   The IRS tool may not work in a later stage, however, since it can't say "refund approved" when there is no refund.  In any case, see if the NC tool will take $1 as an entry.
