Question

Georgia State Income Tax Deduction

I'm itemizing deductions on my Federal Return which includes deducting Georgia State Income taxes paid.

When I look at the Georgia State Return it is transferring the entire amount from the Schedule A Federal Return without adding back the Georgia State Income taxes paid.  I can manually adjust for this on the Georgia Itemized Deduction Smart Worksheet Line 7.  However, shouldn't this be an automatic adjustment?

No, it shouldn't be an automatic adjustment.  Georgia does not require an adjustment to federal adjusted gross income (AGI) on your Georgia State tax return to add back Georgia income deducted on Schedule A of your federal tax return (Form 1040).  For further information see the Additions to Income section of Schedule 1 Instructions on page 20 of the Georgia 2025 IT-511 Individual Income Tax Booklet

So the Georgia State Income Tax deduction on the Federal Return is also allowed to be deducted on the Georgia State Return?

Georgia itemized deductions are based on allowable federal itemized deductions paid during the tax year.  Per the Georgia Instructions, there are some adjustments made on Line 12b, they are for for income taxes other than Georgia and investment interest expense for the production of income exempt from Georgia tax.
