The Virginia 529 contributions can be entered under income when filing your Virginia return.  To enter follow these steps:

    • Sign in to TurboTax
    • Go to State Return
    • Under Income, scroll down to Education
    • Select Start next to Commonwealth Savers (Section 529)

Thanks for the quick response.  I was able to enter the contributions. I was surprised that the carryover from 2023 did not transfer automatically.

Are you checking your VA return, @karlking?  You can find the entry on your Virginia state return, it won't be on the federal portion.

    To enter Virginia 529 contributions:

    1. Open your state return
    2. Continue until you get to the screen Here's is the income that Virginia handles differently.
    3. Scroll down to Education
    4. Select Commonwealth Savers (Section 529)

As you go through the screens on your Virginia return, you will get to a screen Here's the income that Virginia handles differently.  Under the Education section is Commonwealth Savers (Section 529) Plan.  Click Start or Revisit and go through the screens to enter the information.  If eligible, the 529 contribution will result in up to $4000 in deduction that will appear on the Virginia 760 return on line 13 along with any other deductions.  If the 529 contribution is greater than $4000, any amount above that will get carried forward to be deducted in a future year Virginia return.  An exception to the $4000 limit applies to account owners who are 70 or older - these contributions can be deducted in full.

This Virginia Voluntary Contribution website has more information on their 529 plans.
