Question

Why does turbotax desktop tell me I must file my amended return on paper?

Turbotax desktop insisted I must file my amended 1040-X returns for 2023 and 2024 on paper, even though the original returns were filed electronically. Why? I keep reading that the amendments can be filed electronically. My taxes were 90 pages long! This was an incredible waste of time and money. I resent issues like this coming up over and over. I'm about ready to switch to different tax software. And don't tell me about my "unique situation." There was nothing unique about my situation. Am I the only one experiencing this? I seriously doubt it. And what "feedback" does Intuit accept? A "grumpy face." What B.S.

You will not have 90 pages to mail----that would be ridiculous.

Only certain paid tax pros  using professional tax software can e-file past year amended returns. You cannot e-file an amended return that you prepared yourself using TurboTax.  Your 1040X must be printed, signed and dated in ink, and then you need to mail it in.  Use a mailing service like certified mail so you will know the IRS received it, since you will have a long wait for it to be processed.

Do not expect quick results from amending. It can take four months or more for the IRS to process an amended return.

this is what Turbotax says

Generally, you can e-file your amended 2025, 2024, or 2023 federal return via TurboTax if your original return was also e-filed in TurboTax.

However, there's a chance your return can't be e-filed based on your unique situation. If this happens, you'll need to print and mail your tax return.

No further info on what a unique situtaion might be.
