Can I open a 2004 tax return, without the software or package it came in?

Unfortunately, I shredded the hard copy and the software, thinking it would never be needed after 7 years, but now I find I need some information from it. All I have is an electronic copy of the return.

Level 15

TurboTax only retains online tax returns for the last 7 years, the same retention period as the IRS. There is no way to retrieve a 2004 tax return.

However, if you have the .tax file from TurboTax there is a service that may be able to provide a PDF of the return for a price.

Did you mean 2014? The answer is the same, except that the file type is .tax2014.
