Question

MO-NRI vs MO-CR

My mom moved to Idaho mid-year, dad lives in Missouri. ID and MO both require filing MFJ for state if you file MFJ federal. Also ID is community property, MO is not. Approximately 80% of the income is from dad's pensions and interest income, 20% from mom's interest income. For the Idaho part-year return, I reported  6 months of my mom's interest/SSA income for both of my parents. For MO, I filled out the MO-NRI for my mom and entered the other six months of my mom's interest/SSA income that was earned while she lived in MO, figuring there was no double-payment, since ID wouldn't be taxing that, so the MO-CR wasn't appropriate. But Turbotax then created an MO-CR, listing the ID total income and total tax amounts under my dad's column. I'm confused as to whether that's legitimate. Should I leave it as-is and submit both the NRI and the CR? Or do I need to adjust the CR to only reflect half of the ID income and taxes that belongs to Dad because of ID community property laws, even though MO isn't community property? Thanks for any help!

Because your parents are filing as MFJ for Missouri on a Combined Return, check the MO Information Worksheet to see that the dates they each lived in MO are correct.

Then check the MO Adjusted Gross Income for Combined Return worksheet, to verify that income shows for both TP and Spouse columns.  These amounts should transfer to the MO CR form, Line 1, showing amounts in both columns.

TurboTax will adjust the total shown for the TP by a % shown on Line 8.  Make sure mom's tax from her Idaho return shows on Line 10.

I'm not sure you understood my question. TurboTax is filling in the MO-CR data for my dad, and nothing for my mom. I filled out the MO-NRI for my mom. There is no Idaho tax due for my mom that is based on income she earned in Missouri. I only entered her MO income on the MO form and her ID income on the ID form so there should be no tax credit for her in MO, right? Can you take another look at my original question please? Thanks!
