Question

Can we file Federal Jointly and State separately

I worked in Maryland for 2023 while my wife lived and worked in Virginia.  We got married in August 2023 and I moved to Virginia in September, so we are (MFJ) for Federal.  Can we file separately for State based on MD and VA tax code, and if so and I create a mock (MFS) Federal for the purposes of my state return, does that need to be with a separate Turbotax Account?  Or can I create a mock filing with my existing Turbotax account?

You would need to purchase the desktop version of TurboTax.  Then you can create different versions of the federal return and separate state returns.  It will not work on the online TurboTax.

Thank you for your response! Is there a specific version I need to buy, since I need to file twoce for state?

You have to prepare one federal return for joint that you will file and then mock returns MFS and then the two state returns.   Online does not let you do that.
