eFile nonresident alien spouse, married filing separately

I am married filing separately with a nonresident alien (NRA) spouse. I want to eFile my return.

The 2022 Form 1040 instructions on page 14 under the Married Filing Separately heading state:

For electronic filing, enter the spouse's name or “NRA” if the spouse doesn’t have an SSN or ITIN in the en-try space below the filing status check-boxes.

TurboTax 2022 is requiring a first and last name of my spouse and a SSN or ITIN. This is contrary to the 2022 Form 1040 instructions and Form W-7 instructions.

How do I eFile my 2022 return with TurboTax?

Unfortunately, you won't be able to e-file your return in your situation since TurboTax doesn't have the option in your situation.

Please see How should I file my taxes if my spouse is a nonresident alien? for additional details.

@DanaB27, thank you for your prompt reply and I appreciate getting a straightforward answer from an employee.

Your linked page, How should I file my taxes....states

"To file electronically in the future, you’ll have to complete a W-7 form and attach it to your return as explained under Married Filing Jointly with a nonresident alien spouse above."

However, for tax years 2018 through 2025, you can’t claim a personal exemption deduction for yourself, your spouse, or your dependents. I can't request an ITIN for my NRA spouse, this is what I meant in my original post that what TurboTax 2022 wants is contrary to the Form W-7 instructions. This linked webpage is also incorrect.

@DanaB27, how can I raise this issue for correction within the software? Apparently this has been an issue now for four tax years and will continue through tax year 2025.
