Question

When will Form 8915-E be available? TurboTax indicates "IRS instructions related to disaster distributions weren't ready in time for this release." It's been weeks now.

I tried filing 2/12 but that form wasn't available.  Came back to file today, 2/22, still nothing. It's the last document I need for completion.

No, it is not ready yet, but it is scheduled to be ready by the end of the week!    You can use the link below to sign up and be notified when it is available.  If you took a distribution from a retirement account due to coronavirus-related issues, you will be able to waive the penalty and spread the ordinary tax over tax years 2020-2022.    Once the forms are final (should be by the weekend), you will see the options to apply the tax relief provisions on Form 8915-E.

Please sign-up here and we will email you once the form is live.

Where is the form listed??

Today is 2/25, it is not on the Desktop Home and Business version.  I’m spreading the tax over 3 years. You will want to consider this if it will put you into a better status for getting the next stimulus payment.

So I am finally able to complete for 8915-E however now I cannot get past NY state filing and receiving this message:

Check This Entry

Pension/Annuities/IRA Worksheet: Txble Pens/IRA(Reg Dist) We're still working on updates related to Retirement Distributions that qualify for disaster or covid relief. You can keep working on your return and we'll remove this message when it's ready.

I cannot find any information on this online.

How did you even get the to the form?

February 25, 2021

Just go back in and edit your 1099 and it will complete everything for you.

Check your income and tax brackets.  Due to Covid losses I am taking it all this year as it is all in 1 bracket.  Next year 1/3 could push a new bracket and cost me a little extra for the amount over that bracket

Form 8915-E is available in the online version, but it does not let you make the income tax payments ratably for Covid-related Roth withdrawals. It says I reported $0 as a Covid-19 withdrawal when on the previous question I responded that ALL of it was due to Covid. If I check the box "pay tax on entire. . . ," it still shows $0 at the top, but it calculates the correct amount of tax, with no penalty, for the entire amount.

Hopefully, they get the issue with 1/3 payments squared away or I will have to use another software to do my taxes. Tried entering 1099-R in manually, amount keeps showing up as $0.

I contacted them again today, and was told it is the IRS who is holding up the form being approved, but it is expected to be available tonight (around midnight), or tomorrow. I have never used another program to do my taxes, so I am hopeful that it will be available tomorrow.

Check the boxes that appear on your 1099-R.  They have no effect on the COVID or disaster distributions.

TurboTax Online has been updated to include Form 8915-E. If you are using TurboTax CD/Download, the update should be available later today (2/25/2021).

Go back to your 1099-R entry.  After the 1099-R entry screen, you should seen screens pertaining to a COVID-19 or a Qualified Disaster Distribution.  Enter the requested information to see if you're exempt from additional taxes on the distribution.

In TurboTax CD/Download you will be prompted to download any updates available when you open the program.  You can also update the program while you have it open by following these steps:

  1. Click on the Online link in the black bar at the top of the page.
  2. Click on Check for Updates.
  3. TurboTax will download and install any updates available.  If there aren't any updates, you will receive the message "Your software is up to date."

How do you get the 8915-E form to appear? If there are new questions asked regarding this topic how do you initiate them? I have already tried editing my 1099 as suggested and I still received the penalty.

@LD2703 I was able to edit mine and it asked, but some have had to remove and re-add their 1099-R.

To the person saying they filed with the 8915E on the 24th - did you use purchased software or just on TurboTax.com? I am trying to get my taxes done but I cannot get the purchased software to ask about a cares act distribution

The software update for the Form 8915-E will be available tomorrow, 02/26, for the desktop editions.  The update was available today for the TurboTax online web-based editions.
