Rejected federal tax return by IRS, Code: IND-181-01. IP PIN is missing

Hello,

I have e-filed my 2022 TurboTax 100 return 4 times with IRS, and they are all rejected based on the IRS code, IND-181-01 - stating that "The Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN) for the first taxpayer on your return is missing". Every time, I retype my IP PIN, save the TurboTax file, and e-file again, and once again IRS rejects it.  My IP PIN is the correct one, and I have used it successfully for at least the past 5 years. I called TurboTax at 1800 phone number but no live customer support. Would appreciate your comments.

Thanks,

The IRS sends a new IP PIN every year.

From the IRS:  The IRS IP PIN is a 6-digit number assigned to eligible taxpayers to help prevent the misuse of their Social Security number on fraudulent federal income tax returns. A new IP PIN will be generated each year.

Here are two ways to navigate to the section to enter the 6 digit IP PIN:

  • Log in and open your return ("Take me to my return")
  • Once the return is open, then go to the Federal Taxes tab.
  • Subtab Other Tax Situations
  • Scroll down to Other Return Info.
  • Choose Identity Protection PIN and Start (or Revisit.)
  • Next screen asks:  "Did you or any of your dependents get an IP PIN from the IRS for this year's taxes?"

Or another way:

  • Open your return if not already open.  ("Take me to my return.")
  • Once the return is open, click at the top on MY ACCOUNT, then choose TOOLS.
  • In the Tools window choose TOPIC SEARCH.
  • Enter IP PIN without quotes.
  • In the selection list highlight IP PIN and click GO.
  • Next screen asks:  "Did you or any of your dependents get an IP PIN from the IRS for this year's taxes?"

The IP Pin is different than the 5-digit signature Pin. Additionally, the IP Pin will change each and every year. This is an Identity Protection Pin.

You can get an Identity Protection pin here, or if you lost your IP PIN, you can go here to Retrieve IP PIN.

Thanks for the feedback.  Where do I have to enter the IP PIN? The TurboTax weblink rejection file takes me to update my 5-digit PIN, which does not make sense since it is correct anyway, while the IRS rejection statement mentions the IP PIN, which shows that the TurboTax suggestion to update my PIN is NOT related to the IRS rejection due to the IP PIN.

In the previous 5 years, I did not have to get a new IP PIN from IRS, and my TurboTax 1040 return e-filings went through successfully. Why this year, IRS rejects my e-fil due to IP PIN?

Also where do I update the IP PIN on the Desktop 2022 Turbotax Home and Business 1040 return? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

The IRS send the IP PIN to you at the start of the year (new # is every year).  If you misplaced/never saw it, the IRS can replace it.  First, search for the phase 'Replace IP PIN'.  Follow these directions to access the correct IRS web page.  Login to your IRS account.  Search/look for IP PIN.  This should take you to the correct web page.  Read this page VERY CAREFULLY.  The IP PIN is buried in text and does not stand out on the initial read.  Once you have the new code, the previously posted responses will provide a path to entering the value into Turbo Tax.

I finally solved my issue talking with an IRS agent.  The place to enter the 5 digit pin is next to where you would SIGN the return at the very end.  I and to save my file where I was at and venture to forms to find it.  Enter the number ... save the file again and return to the normal format with the pin saved.

You get your pin from IRS go there to get it generated under your account.

Yes, the difference between an Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN, 6 digits) and an e-File PIN (5 digits) is confusing and the difference isn't explained clearly by the TurboTax software or the IRS. However, the instructions that other responders have provided here are correct for entering the IP PIN. Note that if you do enter an IP PIN, I found that its first 5 digits were automatically entered as the e-File PIN when I was walking through the steps to file electronically.

I have the same issue.  I have accessed the IRS website and have my new PIN for this year.  The program does not allow me to use all of the digits and the instructions to correct it are wrong.  Fortunately I was able to find the place to put all of them, but for my PIN for last year it will only allow the 5 digits instead of the six.  So once again the IRS has rejected.  There is NO FIX for this and it appears there are thousands of people having the same issue.  Turbotax is not working right and it appears I now have to file by paper as there is no fix in site.

From answer in 2025 by njjoeg

"I have Home & Business Desktop edition - and its different.

To enter the IP PIN you have to go to Personal Tab, Other Tax Situations sub-tab, Other Return Info section, Identity Protection PIN and enter it there.  The software does not ask for it.   (Tax Year 2025)"

You'll get your IP Pin from irs.gov, sign in, Go to your Profile at the top and select "Identity Protection PIN".

Happy Taxing.
