Question

I have changed my name back to my maiden name. How do I change that on my taxes to match my bank account name?

Did you change your name with Social Security?  Your tax return has to match the name on file at Social Security.  When did you change it?  If it was recently it might not be updated yet for the IRS.  So if your name rejects try the married name.  You change it under My Info.

File your tax return according to how your name is currently on file with the social security administration, even if that is your former name.  The name on your tax return does not have to match your bank accounts or statements as long as the SSN is correct.  To use your preferred name on your tax return next year, first you must do a name change with Social Security.

If you very recently changed your name with Social Security, there is a chance you will be rejected when trying to e-file your tax return for a mis-match since the IRS is slow to update their records.  If that happens, either print your return and file by mail with your preferred name, or use your old name on your tax return to e-file.  The IRS should be up to date by next year.
