Bug in TurboTax Online for 2025

It looks like there is a bug in TurboTax Online for 2025. My wife has 2 inherited IRAs – one traditional and one Roth. She took the required RMDs for each of them by yearend. We received the 1099-Rs for each of them and I entered that data separately for each one. When TurboTax did the review procedure, it said we were $344 short in what we had taken for RMDs. That figure happens to be the difference in the RMD amounts for the 2 IRAs. The software appears to be combining figures from the 2 1099-Rs. TurboTax then asks me if I’ll make up the RMD shortfall during the correction window. I can’t file my taxes until Intuit corrects this bug.

Yes, I suggest using the desktop method. On Desktop, you can click "Forms" in the top right and actually see two separate 1099-R Worksheets. You can verify that Worksheet #1 and Worksheet #2 are distinct.

The Desktop review is much better.  If it flags an error, you can fix it directly on the worksheet in about 5 seconds, whereas the Online version just keeps sending you back to the start of the interview.

No response from TurboTax. They want me to pay extra for the Live option, when this is their bug.

For each of the 1099-Rs:

  1. you  must mark Yes it was RMD
  2. entire distribution was RMD if you took at least the minimum required or more.

You should not be getting an error if entire amount was RMD. Of course, being inherited is a little extra twist in the plot since they can't be combined - they must be calculated separately.

You could have a piece of data stuck. Try these steps:

Online version:

  1. Delete the form/ worksheet- if possible, see How to Delete
  2. Log out of your return and try one or more of the following:
    • Don't use Internet Explorer.
    • Clear cache and cookies,
    • Sign in using a different browser.
    • Sign in using a different device.
  3. Log back into your return.
    • Enter the information again.

Desktop version:

  1. Delete the forms and worksheets
  2. Save your return while closing the program.
  3. Update the program
  4. Open
  5. Enter the information again.

That's a lot to ask of a user when the software has a bug and this bug has carried over from last year without being resolved. Geez!

My experience with web based turbotax is horrible. I upload files, and they don't appear in my list of files. Or I get the files uploaded and they disappear the next time I log in. My deductions equal about half the standard deduction but TurboTax decided I should itemize my deductions which doesn't make sense AT ALL. When I went to review my 1099's it took one of my 1099's and listed it 5 times adding each of the duplicated 1099's to my total income then calculating I owed thousands of dollars. What the heck. Did Intuit fire all their programmers and ask AI to rewrite their website?
