2025 1040X and 1040SR

I originally filed a 1040 long form for 2025 using itemized deductions which produced a refund of $1,309.  Recently realized that I missed 1 source of income.  I entered the corrected information into TurboTax 2025 and it created both a 1040X showing a payment due of $1,486 and a 1040SR which showed an amount owed of $177.  Which is the correct form/amount to file?

The amended form (1040-X) for federal is not ready yet, so you may be seeing the total tax without any adjustments.  If the additional income had no withholding, it may have increased your tax liability and the refund would have been added back as a repayment. Until the actual 1040-X is ready, you should go back and remove the changes so that TurboTax knows the changed numbers versus the original numbers once the amended form is ready.  The IRS does not accept amended returns this early in the tax season through e-file.

If you want to make changes or add a document to a tax return that has already been filed and accepted by the taxing agency, you should follow these guidelines.

  • You must first wait until the initial return is completely processed.
  • You will have to use the same TurboTax account that you used for the original tax return.
  • Once you begin your amendment, you'll see your original return.
  • The refund calculator will start new at $0 and only reflect the changes in the refund or tax due
  • Only make changes to the areas of your return that need to be corrected.
  • You have three years from the date you filed your return or two years after you paid the tax due (whichever is later) to file an amendment

Unfortunately, I got caught up in this year's upcoming taxes and last year's to be corrected taxes.

My question SHOULD have said that I was working on correcting my 2024 taxes.  The rest of the information is correct.  I created a correction to my 2024 taxes and TurboTax created 2 forms.  A 1040X (I originally filed a 1040 with itemized deductions) with an amount due of $1,486 and TurboTax also created a 1040-SR with an amount due of $177.  Which is correct?  Which should I file?

Sorry for the mistake in the original question.

You should file the Form 1040-X, keep the other one for your records.

The Form 1040-X amount due is correct if you entered the correct information in TurboTax for the amended return. I suspect the Form 1040-SR is reporting the tax due if you had prepared your original return using the additional income you entered on the amended return. That amount would be factored in with the refund or amount due with the original return you filed to arrive at the amount due on the amended return.

In other words, you may have gotten a refund on the return you filed, but you should have paid in the $177 shown on the updated Form 1040-SR, so the Form 1040-X is showing the amount you have to pay to straighten things out.
