my 1099-nec says nonemployee compensation. is this the same thing as self employment income?

Yes. Nonemployee compensation is self-employment income.

"NEC" means non-employee compensation.    The IRS considers you to be self-employed if you worked as an independent contractor and did not have tax, Social Security or Medicare withheld from your paychecks.  So you will file as self-employed.

If you have self-employment income for which you will pay self-employment tax for Social Security and Medicare,  you will need to use online Premium software or any version of the desktop software download so that you can prepare a Schedule C for your business expenses.
