Social Security Benefits verses Taxable Income

Hello.  TurboTax says that my Taxable income amount (6a) is about $60,000 less than the Social Security benefits that my wife and I received.  We file jointly.

That seems like a big difference, to me.

TurboTax has checked and double checked everything and says we are ready to file, though.

Should I be worried?

Thank you.

John

The computation for taxable Social Security is made on the Social Security Benefits Worksheet.  Print or view the tax return to review the entries.

You may print or view your full tax returns prior to filing after you have paid for the software.

  • View the entries down the left side of the screen at Tax Tools.
  • Select Print Center.
  • Select Print, save or preview this year's return.
  • Select Include government worksheets.

Do you have an amount in line 6b?   If you do not have anything on line 6b ----go back to the screen that comes immediately after the SSA1099 entry screen.   That screen asks if you lived in certain foreign countries in 2025.  If you skip past that screen or answer incorrectly, your Social Security is not taxed correctly, and you end up getting a letter from the IRS and a reduced refund.
