Cancelled 1099-C

I received 1099-Cs from Discover Student Loans this year for cancelled student loan dept, I filed with those forms and ended up having to pay in for the first time. I recently received a letter from Discover saying that sending me those forms was a mistake and student loan dept cancellation was exempt. What are the next steps I should take?

You will need to file an amended return.  You should receive a corrected Form 1099-C from Discover Student Loans that will also be sent to the IRS.  If you don't receive this corrected form, you should reach out to the loan organization and request it.  This ensure the information the IRS has matches what is reported on your amended return.

To start your amended return in TurboTax, follow the instructions in this link.

I contacted Discover and they said the forms were never filed with the IRS and that they accidentally sent them to me.

You can just proceed with the amended return then.  When providing an explanation, you can just write that you received an 1099-C form erroneously that is being removed from the amended return.
