Look for state tax credits as you go through your state return. You will want to claim as much state tax credit as possible. If there is any left, you can deduct it on the federal sch A for tax paid. You can't claim on Sch A amounts used for the state credit.

For example: If you donated $1,000 and received $600 state tax credit, you may claim the remaining $400 on Sch A.
