Hello. My son is a diesel mechanic and has to buy his own tools for work. Last year he spent a few thousand on tools. Can he deduct this expense as it was for work? We live in Wisconsin.

No, Wisconsin follows the IRS when it comes to itemized deductions and job expenses. They do not have a specific form to itemize expenses, instead they go by the federal Schedule A. The federal government no longer allows itemized work related expenses, therefore, you cannot take a deduction for your sons tools he bought for neither the state or federal returns.
