Question

NYS Star credit and itemized deductions

I received nys star credit in 2025 and I plan in itemizing my federal deductions for 2025. Last year I took the standard deduction. Does the star credit received in 2025 relate to 2024?
wondering if I do not have to subtract this credit from my 2025 property tax on schedule A.

Please advise.

If you have received a New York STAR credit check in 2025, it is considered a refund of property taxes. If you didn't itemize deductions on your 2024 federal return, you generally do not have to report the 2025 STAR check as taxable income on your federal return, even if you itemize in 2025. This is because it is not a recovery of a previously deducted amount.

The 2025 check is usually based on school tax savings for the 2024-2025 school year.
