I recently repaved the parking lot at my church. I paid the contractor myself at a cost of 51,200 dollars.

can I claim this as a cash donation on my taxes?

You didn't give any money to the church. You paid the money to the contractor. So it is not a cash donation.

I suppose you might be able to claim it as a non-cash donation. That will be a bit of a hassle and will require some extra paperwork because of the amount.

The better way to handle it would have been to donate the money to the church and let the church hire and pay the contractor. But it's too late for that now.

for non-cash donations over $5,000 you need a certified appraisal and donee acknowledgement. form 8283 must be filed with your 1040 and since there’s no way to attach it to the TurboTax return you will have to mail it in or use form 8453 to submit the 8283 separately.
