Itemized/Standard Deduction
In Schedule A I have a total deduction of $28,040 on Line 17. When it transfers to Form 1040 Lines 12a and 12c show $27,800. If I increase it by $500 for an Item in Schedule A, Line 17 changes to $28,540 and it shows up in Form 1040 Lines 12a and 12c as $28,540. Am I missing something or is it not transferring correctly in the program for the lower amount? When I reduce the itemized deductions by $8,000 it thinks my standard deduction is $27,800.
I tried mortgage interest and charitable donations. It takes around $375 to toggle it. When I increase the itemized deductions by $350 there is no change in my tax refund. When I increase it by $375 my refund increases by $154, which does not make sense.
Resolved with live support. My standard deduction plus the $600 allowed for charitable donations when the standard deduction is used, exceeds my itemized deductions. In this case, the charitable contributions are not transferring to 1040 Line 12b properly (shows $0) so you have to enter it manually to get the correct tax calculation. They also confirmed that my standard deduction of $27,800 is correct since we are over 65.
