IRS Notifications

I filed my taxes as soon as they were able to be filed and I like everyone else had been seeing in Process/Under Review etc.  I received notification last week notice dated 5/3 out of their MO office stating there was a mistake and my refund was changed in my favor.  It also stated that I should receive my refund within 4 to 6 weeks.  A few days later I received another notification dated 4/29 out of their Austin, TX location stating that I was being audited and I need to provide them x, y, z of the sale of my Real and Personal Property (2nd Home).

I have tried more times than I want to even state on getting them on the phone and I have held for more hours than anyone should have to only to be cutoff, just hung up on or told they were having technical difficulty and that I need to call back.

I looked at my account with the IRS and all it shows is the refund.  It has nothing about the audit.

Dazed and Confused on what to do, HELPPPP!

does the TX notice appear legit?  if it is and you don't respond in a timely manner the IRS will take a position most favorable to it which means you'll get a bill for taxes, penalties and interest and then occur a significant expense to fight it - unless you decide not to fight it.

If you did not get the second stimulus payment you must file a 2020 return to get the credit even if you normally don't file ...  you can use one of  the 10 IRS FREE FILE options to file a fed & state return for free ... but you must log in thru the IRS site :

    https://www.irs.gov/filing/free-file-do-your-federal-taxes-for-free

Of course if you got the first and third checks because you were on SS then are you really sure you did not get the second $600 ?  Did you get a form 1444B mailed to you saying the check/deposit was sent ?  If so you need to have the amount traced and not file a useless return.

Form 3911 to trace a missing refund

we can't see the notice, return or source documents.  you may want to use the following service

The Audit Defense service is provided by TaxResources, Inc., also called TaxAudit.com, in partnership with TurboTax. If you paid for Audit Defense and you received an IRS notice, call TaxResources, Inc. at 877-829-9695, or report your IRS notice on their website at http://intuit.taxaudit.com/. Do not contact the IRS until you have spoken to TaxResources. They may contact the IRS on your behalf.
