Question

How to fix turbotax state tax payment calculation error?

It populates column F with my 2024 Q4 estimated tax payment paid in Jan 2025 on the state tax refund worksheet, and flagged it with error " the amount you entered on your STATE return is less than the individual payments (column C)you made that year(estimated tax, extension payment, or payment when you filed your return).  I searched the internet and found that overwrite it is not way to do it. Please advise how to fix it.

You paid 2024 state tax estimated payment in Jan 2025. Follow these steps:

    1. Go to Federal > Deductions & Credits.
    2. Locate Estimates and Other Taxes Paid.
    3. Click Start/Revisit next to State Estimated Taxes.
    4. 2024 state estimated taxes paid in 2025
    5. By correctly dating it in 2025, TurboTax should realize it is not deductible on your 2024 Federal Schedule A (since you didn't pay it in 2024), which often clears the conflict on the Refund Worksheet.

I agree that you do not want to file a return with an override but sometimes a temporary override will break the cycle and reset the program. If the program is still not working, try an override and go through the step by step section completely through the federal and state and look for where information changed. Correct items in step by step and then you can cancel the override.

Finally, sometimes you will see an error popping up until you have finished a state return and the program has a chance to put all the pieces together.
