Question

How to E-File First Time IL-1041

As a trustee of a trust created last year, I am trying to e-file a IL-1041 in TurboTax Business.  The software says the e-file option is not available for Illinois.  The return itself looks fairly basis, with no adjustments needed from what carried over from the Federal 1041.

Is there a setting or checkbox that could be preventing an e-filing?  Do short year returns or first time filings have any bearing on whether an IL-1041 can be e-filed?

Most state systems, including Illinois, are set up for a standard 12-month calendar year. If you file a return for part of a year like for a trust started in June—it may not be available for e-file. That’s because the software can’t match those dates to the state’s e-file requirements.

While Illinois allows first-time filings to be e-filed, the IRS and state sometimes require a paper return if they haven't yet verified the Employer Identification Number (EIN) in their database.
