Question

Foreign Tax Credit Won't Accept Data for Multiple Countries

When reporting foreign taxes paid on dividends TT asks to list all of the countries (these are reported on two 1099 DIVs on a country by country basis and are derived from individual stock holdings) .  After listing all of the countries TT asks for the information on each 1099 DIV for the first country listed (in this case Canada). Once that is entered, TT moves through a series of additional questions but never comes back to ask for the information on the remaining countries (7 countries in total).  The result is TT only recognizes a portion of the foreign sourced dividends and reduces the tax credit.  This appears to be a glitch in the TT software.   I've seen a thread that suggests using RIC and lump it all under this one category but that is counter to the TT direction (and I assume IRS requirement). How do I override this / correct  the problem?

No, you can either use various or RIC and report in just one category.  This is perfectly acceptable with the IRS and TurboTax despite your misgivings.
