Claiming exemptions
I am married. Lost my spouse. Do I claim single or married on my next tax returns?
If your spouse passed away in 2017 then on your tax return for 2017 you can file as Married Filing Jointly. If they passed away in an earlier year and you do not have any dependents then you would file as Single.
