Can a $3000.00 carry forward stock loss be combined with the current year’s losses?

Example:

Carry Forward   -$3000.00

Current Year       -$4000.00

Total Loss           -$7000.00

Yes, a prior-year capital loss carryforward is combined with your current year's capital gains and losses when you file your taxes.

Up to $3,000 of the loss can be used to offset all other income, however, and then the unused balance will be carried forward to the next tax year.

Yes, in fact  you have to report the carryover every year until it's used up.  You can't skip a year.  Even if you don't report it on your return you have to reduce it by the 3,000 (1,500 MFS) when you carry it over to next year.  You can't choose when to use it.

But you can only deduct 3,000 per year so  a total 7,000 loss you can deduct 3,000 and then carry over 4,000 to next year for 2026.

Oh, by the way , what year is the 3,000 carryover from?   Did you take the max loss last year on  your 2024 return?   Did you have a 6,000 net loss on 2024 so had 3,000 left to carryover?

if you used TurboTax last year the carryforward should be automatic. it would appear on lines 6 and/or 14 of Schedule D

yes, that $7,000 in losses in your example is netted against any capital gains reported.  If the gain is less than $7,000 than up to $3,000 can be used to reduce ordinary income.
