If you are trying to find out what credit accounts might exist in your name, I would start by getting a copy of your credit report from all 3 credit bureaus, they will list open and closed accounts.
www.annualcreditreport.com is the site where you get one free report per bureau per year, as required by federal law. You can also get your report individually from the 3 credit bureaus, but they may charge a fee or try to up-sell you additional services.
Great answer Opus 17! You could also create a free account at CreditKarma.com and get free credit reports more often than once annually.

CreditKarma does not include Experian.
Also, the federal site www.annualcreditreport.com does not require that a user sign up for an account and agree to share personal data, which CreditKarma does. Some people might prefer not to share their data.
