My daughter received a scholarship in box 5 of 1098 - T. this is for the whole year, so am I suppose to split in two to represent 2017 and then not the 2018 portion?

You really need to report the 1098-T as it is.  The IRS also gets a copy.  If you think there is an error, contact the school and inquire about a corrected 1098-T.

The 1098-T is issued based on a calendar year not a school year.  However, it is possible that Scholarships (box 5) and Tuition (box 1 or 2) included amounts for 2018.    Note whether box 7 is checked.  Box 7 indicates amounts billed/paid were for 2018
